Working hours: 8:00am–5:00pm Monday to Thursday and 8:00am–3:00pm Friday
Working arrangement: Primarily based at the Ashington office, with regular travel to the Wakefield office

THE OPPORTUNITY
Due to continued business growth and the increasing scale and complexity of our projects, we are looking to appoint an experienced Technical Manager to lead the day-to-day operation of our Technical Department.
The successful candidate will manage a multidisciplinary technical team across our Ashington and Wakefield offices. This includes Design Managers, Design Engineers, Draughtspersons, the Sustainability Engineer, Quality Engineer and Concrete Technologist.
The Technical Manager will be responsible for managing technical workloads, maintaining engineering and design standards, checking and approving technical work, developing employees and ensuring effective coordination between design, manufacture and site installation.
Working closely with the Technical Director, the role provides an opportunity to take significant responsibility for the continued development of Lynx Precast’s technical capabilities, products, systems and processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include:
- Leading the day-to-day operation of the Technical Department across the Ashington and Wakefield offices.
- Managing Design Managers, Design Engineers, Draughtspersons and specialist technical employees.
- Planning and allocating departmental workloads, resources, priorities and deadlines.
- Monitoring project requirements and ensuring technical information is issued accurately and in accordance with agreed programmes.
- Checking and approving engineering calculations, designs, models and drawings.
- Undertaking designs and calculations for new, complex or technically challenging projects.
- Maintaining strong technical governance and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, British Standards, Eurocodes, product standards and company procedures.
- Developing and standardising design methods, drawings, calculations, technical details and manufacturing information.
- Training, mentoring and supporting the professional development of technical employees.
- Managing employee performance, recruitment, absence and development within the Technical Department.
- Supporting employees working towards professional qualifications and chartership.
- Developing and implementing improved technical systems, processes and working procedures.
- Overseeing the effective use and continued development of AutoCAD, Tekla Structures and structural-design and calculation software.
- Improving coordination and consistency between the Ashington and Wakefield technical teams.
- Overseeing sustainability calculations, embodied-carbon assessments and the development of Environmental Product Declarations.
- Providing management oversight for quality systems, digital inspections, Field View implementation and continuous improvement.
- Overseeing technical matters relating to concrete materials, testing, mix development and performance.
- Supporting the development of new products, accessories, manufacturing methods and technical capabilities.
- Coordinating design requirements with Production, Quality, Commercial, Contracts, Logistics and site teams.
- Acting as a technical link between design, manufacture, delivery and installation.
- Providing technical support to resolve factory, concrete plant and site-related issues.
- Investigating technical problems and supporting the resolution of defects and non-conformances.
- Attending customer meetings, project design-team meetings and internal coordination meetings.
- Supporting sales enquiries, technical presentations and key customer discussions.
- Supporting product certification, technical approvals and regulatory compliance.
- Reporting departmental performance, technical risks, resource requirements and development priorities to the Technical Director.
- Promoting a positive culture of technical excellence, collaboration, health and safety, quality and continuous improvement.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Applicants should have:
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant technical and design experience within the precast concrete, structural concrete or a closely related engineering environment.
- Previous experience managing or leading a multidisciplinary engineering or technical team.
- Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and precast concrete design.
- Experience checking and approving engineering calculations, designs and technical drawings.
- Experience completing designs and calculations for complex structural projects.
- A strong understanding of design-to-manufacture and design-to-installation processes.
- Detailed knowledge of applicable British Standards, Eurocodes and precast concrete product standards.
- Experience using AutoCAD, Tekla Structures and relevant structural-design and calculation software.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities, workloads and project deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- The confidence to make sound technical decisions and provide clear direction to others.
- The ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to employees, customers and other stakeholders.
- Experience collaborating with production, commercial, quality, contracts and site teams.
- A strong commitment to technical compliance, quality and continuous improvement.
- A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel regularly between the Ashington and Wakefield offices.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The following would be beneficial but are not essential:
- Chartered Engineer status or active progress towards chartership.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution, such as the Institution of Structural Engineers or Institution of Civil Engineers.
- Experience managing technical teams across more than one location.
- Experience developing design software, systems and automated technical processes.
- Knowledge of embodied-carbon assessments, sustainability requirements and Environmental Product Declarations.
- Knowledge of concrete technology, materials testing and concrete-mix development.
- Experience with Trimble Viewpoint Field View or similar digital quality-management software.
- Experience supporting quality-management systems, product certification or technical approvals.
- Experience developing new precast products, accessories or manufacturing techniques.
- Knowledge of precast concrete manufacture, delivery and site installation.
