Overview
The Facilities Operative plays a key role in maintaining the safety, functionality, appearance, and day-to-day operation of company buildings, grounds, facilities, and supporting infrastructure. The role encompasses general maintenance, building repairs, grounds maintenance, factory utilities, basic IT support, and assistance with site improvement projects. Working closely with Facilities, Maintenance, and operational teams, the Facilities Operative helps ensure the site remains safe, efficient, compliant, and fit for purpose whilst supporting business continuity across all departments.
Responsibilities
Site Maintenance & Building Repairs
- Carry out general building maintenance and repairs across the site.
- Undertake minor carpentry, painting, decorating, and repair works as required.
- Repair and maintain doors, locks, windows, fencing, walkways, and other site infrastructure.
- Assist with office moves, furniture installation, and workspace modifications.
- Identify and report defects that require specialist attention or contractor support.
Factory Utilities & Services
- Support upkeep and routine inspection of factory utility systems including compressed air, extraction and HVAC systems, water services & associated infrastructure.
- Conduct basic preventative maintenance activities on site services and equipment.
- Monitor utility performance and report faults or abnormal operating conditions.
- Support maintenance shutdown activities and planned improvement projects.
Grounds Maintenance & Gardening
- Maintain the general appearance and cleanliness of company grounds.
- Carry out grass cutting, hedge trimming, weed control, and seasonal planting where required.
- Ensure external pathways, parking areas, and communal spaces remain safe and presentable.
- Assist with litter management and external waste control.
General Facilities Support
- Assemble office, production, and welfare area furniture and equipment.
- Support the installation, relocation, and removal of workplace equipment.
- Assist with site improvement projects and facility upgrades.
- Support contractor activities ensuring works are completed safely and in accordance with site requirements.
- Respond to day-to-day facilities requests from departments across the business.
IT & Technology Support
- Provide first-line support for common IT and technology-related issues.
- Assist employees with basic hardware setup and troubleshooting, including PCs, laptops, monitors, keyboards, printers, and mobile devices.
- Support workstation moves, equipment installations, and office relocations.
- Assist with the deployment and replacement of IT equipment.
- Liaise with external IT support providers to report issues and track resolution progress.
- Maintain basic inventories of company IT equipment and peripherals.
- Support the setup of meeting room technology, screens, projectors, and audio-visual equipment.
- Escalate complex technical issues to the appropriate IT support provider.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company Health & Safety procedures, safe systems of work, and risk assessments.
- Wear and maintain appropriate PPE for all tasks undertaken.
- Ensure work areas are kept clean, organised, and free from hazards.
- Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and equipment defects promptly.
- Support compliance with environmental, waste management, and sustainability initiatives.
Teamwork & Continuous Improvement
- Work collaboratively with other Facilities and Maintenance personnel to achieve departmental objectives.
- Provide support and cover for colleagues during periods of absence or increased workload.
- Contribute ideas for improving site appearance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Assist in maintaining maintenance records and completing assigned work requests.
Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in a facilities, maintenance, caretaker, or building services role.
- Experience carrying out basic building repairs and general maintenance activities.
- Practical experience using hand and power tools safely.
Desirable
- Experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Basic electrical, plumbing, or mechanical maintenance knowledge.
- Basic first line IT support exposure.
Skills & Qualifications

- Full UK driving license.
- Basic Health & Safety awareness
Desirable
- Forklift Truck qualification.
- IPAF or PASMA qualification.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- COSHH awareness training.
- Experience maintaining compressed air or extraction systems
