About the School
We are a specialist provision catering for young people aged 11–16 with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), Autism, and associated complex and challenging behaviour. Our pupils often have experienced disrupted education and require patient, skilled staff who can help them feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.
The Role
We are seeking a full-time Behaviour Support Assistant to start immediately. This is a 12-week temporary contract with a genuine, well-supported pathway to a permanent position for a candidate who demonstrates reliability, impact, and alignment with our values.
This is a hands-on, frontline role. You will work closely with teaching staff, the SENCO, and external agencies to provide the consistent boundaries and relational support our pupils need to thrive.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Provide dedicated 1:1 or small-group support to pupils during lessons, helping them stay regulated and access the curriculum
- Implement behaviour support plans and de-escalation strategies tailored to individual pupils' triggers and needs
- Assist with transitions between lessons, break times, and less structured parts of the day, where anxiety and behaviours can spike
- Use positive behaviour management techniques to de-escalate situations calmly and safely, minimising disruption and maintaining dignity for the pupil
- Support the class teacher with classroom management, preparation of resources, and adapting activities to meet sensory or communication needs
- Monitor and record behavioural incidents accurately, contributing to review meetings and risk assessments
- Build trusted, consistent relationships with pupils, acting as a key adult and secure base for those who struggle to engage
- Liaise with pastoral and safeguarding staff to flag concerns and share relevant observations promptly
- Attend team meetings, training, and supervision as required, including reflective practice around challenging incidents
- Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures, acting in the best interests of the child at all times
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, ideally within an education, residential, or specialist setting
- Resilience, emotional maturity, and a calm, non-judgemental approach under pressure
- Understanding of SEMH, Autism, and trauma-informed practice (or a strong commitment to developing this)
- Team Teach training (or equivalent positive handling training) is highly desirable
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Reliability, punctuality, and a genuine passion for improving outcomes for vulnerable young people
Pay: £14.24-£15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 32.5 per week
