About Sendsory
Sendsory is looking for a passionate, nurturing and committed Communication & Interaction Practitioner to join our specialist SEND provision, supporting primary-aged children with speech, language, communication and interaction needs.
This is a rewarding opportunity to work as part of a therapeutic and child-centred team, helping children to develop their communication, emotional regulation, independence, confidence and wider life skills.
You will work closely with our Therapeutic Teacher, delivering engaging 1:1 and small-group learning and therapeutic sessions, while providing consistent, supportive and highly individualised care.
The role
As a Communication & Interaction Practitioner, you will play an important role in creating a safe, predictable and nurturing environment where every child can communicate, participate and thrive.
You will support children to access learning and develop their individual outcomes, including those identified within their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and through the AQA Unit Award Scheme.
You will also help children develop the skills they need for everyday life, including social communication, emotional regulation, independence, resilience, problem-solving and positive relationships with others.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, child-centred 1:1 and small-group sessions under the direction of the Therapeutic Teacher, including curriculum-based learning.
- Implement individual EHCP outcomes within sessions, under the direction of the Therapeutic Teacher.
- Support pupils to achieve outcomes linked to AQA Unit Award Scheme Certificates.
- Promote life skills, social communication, emotional regulation and independence through daily routines, structured activities and therapeutic interactions.
- Encourage children to develop confidence, self-help skills, problem-solving abilities and positive peer relationships.
- Provide personal care where required, always maintaining each child's dignity, privacy and respect.
- Set up and tidy therapeutic and learning spaces, ensuring they are safe, welcoming and calming.
- Support children during breakfast and lunch, encouraging independence, communication and positive social interaction.
- Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches to support children when they are dysregulated or experiencing challenging behaviour, in line with relevant training and organisational procedures.
- Build consistent, positive relationships with pupils while modelling appropriate behaviour, emotional regulation and clear boundaries.
- Record and report behaviour incidents, wellbeing concerns and safeguarding concerns in line with organisational procedures.
- Prepare and adapt resources, including creating visuals, printing, laminating and modifying materials to meet individual needs.
- Attend safeguarding and behaviour briefings and contribute to team debriefs and solution-focused planning.
- Support children's emotional regulation, resilience and positive relationships through an attachment-aware and trauma-informed approach, recognising individual triggers and responding with consistency, predictability and compassion.
Communication & Interaction specialism
As a Communication & Interaction Practitioner, you will bring your SEND specialism into your everyday practice.
You will:
- Support children with speech, language and social communication needs through clear, simple and accessible communication.
- Use visual supports, gestures, modelling and other appropriate communication strategies to help children understand and express themselves.
- Create regular opportunities for turn-taking, listening, interaction and expressive communication throughout learning, routines and play.
- Develop children's confidence and ability to communicate their needs, preferences, thoughts and feelings.
- Share your knowledge and understanding of communication and interaction needs with colleagues.
- Model effective communication approaches and support colleagues to use consistent language, visuals and strategies across the provision.
- Contribute to a consistent and inclusive communication environment that enables every child to understand, participate and interact as successfully as possible.
About you
We are looking for someone who is:
- Passionate about working with children with SEND.
- Warm, patient, compassionate and emotionally attuned.
- Confident in building trusting relationships with children who may have complex communication and interaction needs.
- Able to remain calm, consistent and solution-focused when children are dysregulated.
- Knowledgeable about, or keen to develop their understanding of, speech, language and communication needs.
- Able to use and model visual communication strategies and adapt their communication to meet individual needs.
- Committed to a trauma-informed, attachment-aware and child-centred approach.
- A strong team player who is willing to share ideas and learn from colleagues.
- Organised and able to follow individual plans, procedures and professional guidance.
- Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Respectful of each child's individuality, dignity and right to be heard.
