About the Role
USP Steels is looking for an experienced and reliable Heavy Gauge Decoiler Operator / Setter to join our Production team at our Pedmore Road facility.
This is a hands-on role responsible for setting and operating our heavy gauge decoiling line, processing steel coil into flat sheet and plate accurately, safely and efficiently. The successful candidate will have experience working with heavy gauge steel processing equipment and a strong understanding of coil handling, machine set-up, quality requirements and safe working practices.
You will play an important role in maintaining production output, product quality and operational efficiency while ensuring all material is processed in line with customer specifications.
Key Duties
· Set up and operate the heavy gauge decoiling line safely and efficiently.
· Load and unload heavy steel coils using appropriate lifting and material handling equipment.
· Set machine parameters according to production orders, material specifications, thicknesses, widths and required cut lengths.
· Process steel coil into sheet and plate to the required dimensions and tolerances.
· Monitor the decoiling, levelling and cutting process to maintain consistent product quality.
· Carry out dimensional and visual quality checks throughout production.
· Read and interpret production orders, works instructions and material specifications accurately.
· Identify and report material defects, processing issues or equipment faults.
· Make appropriate machine adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
· Ensure finished material is correctly identified, labelled, stacked and prepared for onward movement.
· Complete production records and relevant system documentation accurately.
· Work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance and Despatch teams to maintain an efficient flow of material through the facility.
· Support routine machine checks and basic preventative maintenance, escalating faults where necessary.
· Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area.
· Follow all company Health & Safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE and safe handling of heavy steel products.
· Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing productivity, quality and operational efficiency.
· Carry out other reasonable production duties when required.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
· Previous experience operating and/or setting a heavy gauge decoiling, cut-to-length or similar steel processing line.
· Experience working with heavy gauge steel coil, sheet or plate.
· Good understanding of steel processing and coil handling.
· Ability to set machinery accurately against production specifications.
· Experience using measuring equipment to check dimensions and tolerances.
· Good awareness of Health & Safety requirements within a heavy manufacturing environment.
· Ability to identify processing or quality issues and take appropriate action.
· Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a production team.
· Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding manufacturing environment.
Desirable:
· Overhead crane experience and relevant certification.
· Forklift truck licence.
· Experience operating levelling, straightening or cut-to-length equipment.
· Experience processing a range of steel grades, gauges and coil sizes.
· Previous experience within a steel stockholding or steel processing environment.

Working Conditions
- Full-time position, 40 hours per week
- Overtime may be offered, including weekends
- 25 days annual leave plus UK public holidays
