The Role
We are seeking a technically strong and enthusiastic full-time Accountant to join our team, with VAT compliance at the heart of this role. Approximately two-thirds of your time will be spent overseeing our VAT function – working alongside a junior team member (without direct line management responsibility) to ensure VAT returns are prepared accurately, submitted on time, and handled in accordance with Making Tax Digital requirements.
The remainder of the role focuses on the preparation of year-end accounts and other core compliance work. As we grow and evolve, the role has real scope to flex and develop – we're looking for someone who embraces that, brings energy and enthusiasm to their work, and is genuinely committed to helping us deliver an excellent service to our clients.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the preparation and submission of VAT returns across a varied client portfolio, working alongside a junior team member
- Handle VAT queries, resolving straightforward matters independently and escalating technical issues to the Directors
- Identify and suggest improvements to VAT workflows and processes
- Produce year-end accounts for sole traders and limited companies from both complete and incomplete records
- Prepare corporation tax computations and returns, ensuring accuracy and timely submission
- Prepare self-assessment tax returns and supporting schedules
- Maintain accurate bookkeeping records and reconciliations where required
- Work efficiently across a variety of software, including Xero, QuickBooks and Sage, adapting to different client systems
- Respond to routine client queries, escalating technical or unusual matters to Directors
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- 5+ years' experience in practice, with solid hands-on VAT experience
- Proficient with accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage
- Confident with Microsoft Office (especially Excel, Word, and Teams)
- Adaptable, enthusiastic, and genuinely committed to delivering excellent client service
- Self-motivated and reliable, with a readiness to take ownership and grow with the role
Desirable:
- ICAEW / ACCA qualified (or part-qualified with relevant experience)
- Experience working with small, owner-managed businesses
- A genuine interest in improving processes and how things are done
