The Nightshift Hygiene Team Leader is responsible for leading and organising the Hygiene Operatives to ensure the effective cleaning and sanitising of livestock pens, auction rings, walkways, lairage areas and associated facilities within the livestock mart. The role is essential in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, which ensures animal welfare, biosecurity and workplace safety and prepares the mart for livestock sales and daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Organise and supervise the activities of the Nightshift Hygiene Operative Team to ensure high standards of performance and conduct.
- Pressure wash and clean cattle and sheep pens, sale rings, raceways, holding areas, and walkways.
- Remove manure, bedding and other waste from livestock areas.
- Apply approved disinfectants in accordance with company biosecurity procedures.
- Ensure all livestock areas are cleaned, disinfected, safe, and ready for incoming stock and scheduled sales.
- Operate pressure washers, hoses and other cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate cleaning and disinfection records in line with company procedures.
- Monitor staff attendance, maintaining accurate absence and holiday records and reporting concerns to the Head of Livestock Yard Operations.
- Prepare and manage staff rotas to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained to meet operational requirements. Arrange shift cover where required and communicate rota changes promptly to team members.
- Report damaged equipment, maintenance requirements and biosecurity concerns to the Head of Livestock Yard Operations.
Health, Safety and Biosecurity Responsibilities
- Comply with all Health and Safety legislation, company policies and safe working procedures.
- Follow strict biosecurity measures to minimise the risk of disease transmission between livestock consignments.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including waterproof clothing, gloves, safety boots and eye protection.
- Handle cleaning chemicals safely in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manufacturer instructions.
- Report hazards, accidents, incidents, and near misses immediately.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience in cleaning within an agricultural, livestock or industrial environment.
- Experience supervising or leading a small team.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working hours will vary depending on livestock sale schedules and operational requirements. Flexibility is essential and additional hours may be required during busy sale periods.
