Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Trailer/Workshop Technician to be responsible for keeping our hire fleet in top condition, supporting smooth operations and delivering exceptional service to our customers.
About TCM Trailers
TCM Trailers is a specialist trailer hire and events company based in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
We have a unique fleet of vintage Airstreams, exhibition trailers and hospitality units that are used by major brands, sporting organisations and businesses at events, exhibitions, roadshows and promotional campaigns across the UK.
We're looking for a practical, hands-on Trailer/Workshop Technician to join our team.
This is a genuinely varied role. You'll predominantly be working at our Lichfield unit preparing, repairing and maintaining our trailers, alongside nationwide travel when required to deliver, collect, set up and break-down units at events.
No two days are the same. Over the summer show season, it’s all hands on deck and you will need to be flexible and work collaboratively with colleagues to meet the objectives of the business and the needs of our clients.
The Role
You'll be involved in all aspects of keeping our trailer fleet in excellent condition and ready for customer hire, working as a part of a small team while also being confident working independently.
Day to day responsibilities:
- Preparing our fleet of trailers and Airstreams for customer hire and events through general trailer maintenance and repairs, including GRP and aluminium repairs and modifications; checking lighting, brakes, tyres and general trailer condition; basic electrical work and fault finding
- Refurbishment and modification of trailers, including installing and repairing fixtures, fittings and equipment
- General workshop maintenance, including carrying out general repairs
- Liaising with other team members and customers
- Maintaining effective records of repairs and maintenance for compliance and future reference
Occasional responsibilities (particularly during the summer show season):
- Assisting with cleaning and preparing trailers before and after hire, loading and unloading furniture and event equipment
- Delivering and collecting trailers from events plus event set-up and break-down in collaboration with clients - which may include carrying out general repairs and problem solving on-site
There will also be opportunities to get involved with new projects and builds, refurbishment work and modifications to our growing fleet. Over time, we anticipate developing our trailer build programme and see this role as pivotal in growing this area of work.
About You
We're looking for someone who is practical, reliable and enjoys solving problems with strong communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
You'll ideally have:
- Previous experience working with GRP and aluminium
- Practical workshop, repair or vehicle/trailer experience
- Experience with electrics would be a strong advantage
- A full UK driving licence
- Previous experience towing trailers, or the confidence and ability to learn quickly
- Good attention to detail
- A positive, can-do attitude
- The ability to work independently and use your initiative
- Good organisational and time-management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
- The flexibility to travel and work away from the unit when required
- A willingness to get stuck into all aspects of the job
You don't necessarily need experience in every area. We're looking for a good practical all-rounder who is confident learning new skills and using their initiative.
Essential Requirements
- Experience working with GRP and aluminium
- Good practical and problem-solving skills
- Reliable and organised
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to tow trailers
- Able to work independently and as part of a small team
- Good communication skills
- Physically fit and comfortable with hands-on work, lifting and working in different environments
- Willing to travel and occasionally work away from the Lichfield unit
Desirable but not essential
- Experience with electrical systems
- Trailer maintenance experience
- Experience working at events or exhibitions
What We Offer
- Full-time, permanent position
- Competitive salary based on experience
- Varied and interesting work – no two days are the same
- A hands-on role within a small, friendly family business
- The opportunity to work on a unique fleet of vintage Airstreams and specialist trailers
- Nationwide travel and work at some fantastic events and venues
- Opportunities to develop your skills
- Tools and equipment provided
- Free on-site parking
- Overtime available during busy periods
Why Work for TCM?
This isn't a conventional workshop job.
You could spend one day repairing a vintage Airstream at our Lichfield unit, the next preparing a promotional trailer for a major brand, and later in the week towing a hospitality unit to a sporting event.
We're a small team, so everyone plays an important part and gets involved in a wide range of work.
If you're someone who enjoys working with your hands, fixing things, learning new skills and seeing the finished result of your work, this could be a great opportunity.
