Join Our Team as a Payroll Specialist at Hawthorn Tax
About the Role:
At Hawthorn Tax, we are team of accountants and tax advisers that care. The care for our clients and team filters through into everything that we do. We are a small practice that is growing quickly, so finding the best people to join us in our journey is a top priority.
We provide full accountancy and tax services to both individuals and businesses. An important part of our offering to business clients is payroll operation and pension compliance. We are looking for an experienced individual to take ownership of our payroll services and improve the systems and processes currently in place.
The role is part-time and flexible – we’d like to have a conversation with candidates around what would work best for them and try to match this to the needs of clients and our business.
Remuneration:
- £20 per hour
- We can discuss the number of hours with you. We would require at least 12 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:
- Process payroll on behalf of employers.
- Deal with starter and leaver processes.
- Communicate relevant information to employees and employers in a timely manner.
- Calculate and process statutory pay.
- Prepare payroll journals for posting in accountancy software.
- PAYE registrations.
- Support the creation of streamlined processes to collect relevant information from employers/employee.
- Pension auto-enrolment administration.
Note: Your duties may extend beyond this list, adapting to the evolving needs of our dynamic business.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proven experience in a Personal Tax related role for at least 3 years.
- Experience and/or familiarity with Self Employment pages, Rental income pages, tax residency and FIG, capital gains on property, pension Annual Allowances charges, income and gains on cryptoassets.
- Desirable ATT qualification or similar.
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a payroll role in practice (Bureau).
- Proficiency in using payroll software and experience with BrightPay.
- Strong understanding of payroll processes and rules.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
- Ability to analyse and resolve complex payroll issues.
