About the Role
Study Mind is seeking a compassionate, patient and experienced Female SEN Tutor to support a Year 4 student experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and severe anxiety.
This placement is about far more than academic tuition. You'll play a key role in rebuilding confidence, reducing anxiety around education and supporting a gradual, successful return to school.
Alongside delivering engaging KS2 English, Maths and Science sessions, one day each week will focus entirely on reintegration mentoring, helping the student rebuild trust in education and prepare for returning to school.
About the Student
Our student is a bright Year 4 learner who was previously working at age-related expectations before anxiety prevented her from attending school.
She has no identified learning difficulties, and her barriers to education are emotional rather than academic. She is warm, creative and thrives when learning feels safe, predictable and enjoyable.
Maths has become a particular source of anxiety, so rebuilding confidence in this subject gently and positively will be an important aspect of the role.
Your Role
You will provide engaging 1:1 home tuition, including:
- KS2 English
- KS2 Maths
- KS2 Science
- Confidence building and emotional regulation
- Reintegration mentoring (one session each week)
- Supporting a gradual return to school alongside the family and school staff
Sessions should remain flexible, engaging and tailored to the student's emotional needs on the day.
Student Interests
Building lessons around the student's interests will be essential for developing rapport and engagement.
She enjoys:
- Arts and crafts
- Formula One
- Space and the universe
- Playing the ukulele
- Trampolining
- Story writing and creative activities
- Spending time with her cat
These interests should be used wherever possible to make learning enjoyable and reduce anxiety.
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Build trust before introducing challenge.
- Deliver calm, low-pressure, interest-led sessions.
- Break learning into small, achievable steps.
- Handle Maths sensitively, beginning with activities that promote success and confidence.
- Give advance notice of session content and maintain consistent routines.
- Use sensory supports such as fidgets, slime or kinetic sand where appropriate.
- Celebrate effort and progress through positive reinforcement.
Reintegration Support
A key element of this placement is supporting the student's gradual return to education.
One session each week (Tuesday) will focus on reintegration mentoring, including:
- Building emotional resilience.
- Developing anxiety-management strategies.
- Supporting confidence around school.
- Gradual familiarisation with the school environment, such as short walks to the school gates.
- Working collaboratively with Mum and the Deputy Headteacher to plan and review reintegration activities.
The aim is for the tutor to support the student in completing at least one session within the school setting by the end of September, helping to create a positive bridge back into education.
We're Looking For Someone Who Has Experience With:
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Anxiety and SEMH
- Relationship-led learning
- Reintegration into school
- Delivering engaging KS2 tuition
- Supporting emotionally vulnerable children
Experience working alongside schools and families to support reintegration would be highly desirable.
Essential Requirements
- Experience supporting students with anxiety, EBSA and SEMH.
- Strong knowledge of the KS2 English, Maths and Science curriculum.
- Calm, patient and nurturing approach.
- Excellent relationship-building skills.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Strong safeguarding knowledge and understanding of working with vulnerable children.
