Post No. POSN005121 - Trainee Enforcement Officer - Trading Standards – Apprenticeship
Newport City Council’s Trading Standards Service protects consumers and supports legitimate businesses by enforcing a wide range of legislation that ensures a fair, safe and legal trading environment. We are now looking to recruit a Trainee Enforcement Officer to join our team.
This is an 18-month fixed-term apprenticeship, funded by the Welsh Government, offering a unique opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to achieve the Level 4 Regulatory Compliance qualification, while working in a supportive and professional Trading Standards environment.
About the Role:
The primary focus of this role will be to support enforcement activity relating to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, including:
Conducting inspections of retail premises- Carrying out test purchase operations
- Supporting investigations into illegal tobacco and vape products
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will also assist in delivering a broader range of Trading Standards functions, gaining valuable practical experience.
You will work alongside experienced enforcement officers, supporting a variety of regulatory activities and building the knowledge and competencies required to successfully complete your apprenticeship. You must have the ability to travel throughout and occasionally beyond the Greater Gwent area working with different Local Authorities.
Training and Development:
You will undertake the Level 4 Regulatory Compliance apprenticeship, delivered by ALS Training, combining structured learning with hands-on experience.

The dedicated training cohort is due to start in August 2026.
