Overview
Working in General Practice is a busy, varied and rewarding role. As a member of our Reception & Administration Team, you will be one of the first points of contact for our patients while also providing essential administrative support to the wider practice team.
No two days are the same. The role requires someone who is friendly, organised, adaptable and able to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment.
If you do not already have GP practice experience, you will be trained and supported to develop the knowledge and skills required for the role.
About Burney Street Practice
Burney Street Practice is one GP Practice operating across two sites in Greenwich and Lewisham, approximately a 10-minute walk apart.
We have a multidisciplinary team including GP Partners, salaried GPs, nursing staff, reception and administration colleagues, alongside Primary Care Network and community teams.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Medical Receptionist & Administrator to become part of our established team.
Job Description
The successful candidate will work across both Reception and Administration, providing an effective and efficient service to patients, colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
Reception Duties
Your responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming patients and visitors in a friendly, professional and courteous manner
- Answering incoming telephone calls and dealing with patient enquiries
- Booking, amending and cancelling appointments in accordance with practice procedures
- Helping and signposting patients to the most appropriate clinician or healthcare service
- Responding to patient queries and providing accurate information
- Processing repeat prescription requests and directing queries appropriately
- Handling requests for home visits in accordance with practice protocols
- Maintaining a clean, tidy and professional reception area
- Supporting the opening and closing of the practice when required
Administration Duties
You will also undertake a range of administrative duties, including:
- Processing incoming and outgoing correspondence
- Scanning, filing and maintaining accurate patient records
- Processing new and temporary patient registrations
- Updating patient information on EMIS web
- Monitoring and completing administrative tasks
- Supporting patient call and recall work, including QOF and long-term condition care
- Processing administrative requests and documentation
- Supporting clinical and non-clinical colleagues with delegated administrative tasks
- Attending staff meetings and contributing to service improvements
The duties are varied, and the successful candidate will undertake a range of responsibilities depending on the needs of the practice.
Who We Are Looking For
Previous experience within a GP practice or medical environment would be an advantage, but we also welcome applications from candidates without GP experience who have good transferable skills and are willing and quick to learn.

Previous experience of EMIS Web or another clinical system is desirable but not essential.
Hours & Flexibility
Applicants must be available to work Monday to Friday, with shifts scheduled between:
6.45 am and 6.30 pm
Due to the needs of the practice, you must also be flexible and able to accommodate changes to your working hours at short notice when required.
The role involves working across both of our practice sites.

- Complete mandatory and statutory training
- Work in accordance with practice policies and procedures
