Young People’s Session Worker- Dance- Job Description (no dance experience required)
3.5 hours per week (term time only)
Salary: £13.44 per hour
Wednesdays 5.15-7.15pm (Bourne Community Hub)
Fixed term 9th September 2026 – March 2027 with the aim to extend with additional funding.
Thursdays 3.45-5.15pm (Branksome Centre)
Fixed term 9th September 2026 – July 2027 with the aim to extend with additional funding.
Role purpose
1. To support the children and young people (ages 4-17yrs) in accessing free, term time dance sessions provided by Bonkerz Dance at Bourne and Pavillion Dance South West at Branksome; offering emotional support where they need encouragement to join in & safeguarding the children.
2. To maintain up to date contact information, registers and other admin so that Dance teachers can deliver their sessions effectively.
3. To monitor observe and oversee the health and safety throughout the running of the sessions.
4. To champion children and young people within our communities and develop partnerships focussed on delivering support to children and young people.
5. To be part of the wider work of Poole Communities Trust and share in the values of the Trust.
Key relationships
Reporting to: Senior Young People’s Worker
Supervises: n/a
Work alongside both Bonkerz and Breakin’ Free Dance Teachers
Other key relationships: Local people, local community organisations, Schools, BCP Council, NHS services that support young people, Dorset Police and other statutory and charitable organisations.
Key areas of responsibility
1. You will support the weekly delivery of both Bonkerz Dance and Breakin’ Free classes, by signing the children in at the start of their session and ensuring they leave with their authorised adult.
The Wednesday Bonnkerz Dance is structured as follows:
5:15-5:30 Arrive at Bourne Community Hub to set up drink, check the complies with health and safety and collect the paperwork from the office.
5.30-6.15pm session 1 for Under 10’s.
6.15-7pm session 2 for Over 10’s.
7-7:15 Wash up cups, put paperwork away, reset the room.
The Thursday Breakin’ Free Dance is structured as follows:
3:45pm Arrive at The Branksome Centre to unlock the building, set up drinks and collect the paperwork from the office.
4-5pm dance class for 7-12yrs.
5-5:15 Tidy up, Reset the room, Wash up cups, put paperwork away and lock up.
2. You will be accessible to children and young people in the hall, throughout the duration of their class, being fully available to them if they require any emotional support or encouragement to join in and participate in the class.
3. To accompany children as and when they have reason to exit the hall.
4. To be on hand to administer any first aid needed throughout the duration of the evening.
5. To carry out administrative tasks of updating registers and emergency contact details when we have new children and young people signing up, and monitoring data.
6. Work closely with the Senior Young People’s Worker and other members of the PCT staff team to successfully support participatory activities for children and young people, which are responsive to the needs of our community.
7. Support individual young people and encourage the development of self-awareness.
8. Have conversations with young people, identifying issues affecting them and how their needs can be met. Support Senior Young People’s Worker in referrals when specialist support is needed.
9. Ensure appropriate boundaries are set and maintained.
10. Undertake Safeguarding and First Aid training and ensure the Trust’s policies are promoted and adhered to.
11. Support gathering feedback to enable funders and the Trust Board to monitor and evidence the effectiveness of our work and its outcomes.
12. Implement operational and health and safety procedures during sessions.
13. Respond positively and constructively to feedback from local communities.
14. Undertake continuing professional development and training.
15. As the Trust is a small organisation which works very much with a team ethos, the post holder will need to be flexible and when required and able, support the youth offer across all sites, through additional hours such as:
Holiday programmes, session cover for other youth activities (e.g. Youth sessions, football)
16. Where alternative funding is available, with advanced notice and is mutually agreed between yourself and the Senior Young People’s Worker, you may be asked to support our holiday sessions and other youth activities. These may include arts and crafts, sports, cookery with young people etc.
