Assistant Psychologist / Psychotherapist
Residential Children’s Care Settings
Location: Kirkham/Preston, Lancashire
About the Role
We are recruiting an Assistant Psychologist / Psychotherapist to join a specialist therapeutic service delivering trauma-informed psychological support within residential children’s care settings.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about working with children and young people with complex needs, including developmental trauma, attachment difficulties, emotional and behavioural challenges, harmful sexual behaviour and neurodiversity.
You will work under the supervision of a HCPC-registered psychologist and experienced therapists, supporting both young people and the residential staff teams around them.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting psychological assessment, formulation, and care planning
- Delivering 1:1 therapeutic support under clinical supervision
- Co-facilitating therapeutic or psychoeducational sessions
- Observing and recording emotional, behavioural, and relational presentations
- Supporting residential staff through consultation, reflective practice, and guidance
- Assisting with clinical documentation, reports, and outcome monitoring
- Working in line with safeguarding, ethical, and professional standards
Essential Requirements
- Masters Degree in Psychology or a relevant therapeutic qualification
- Experience working with children or adolescents (care, education, CAMHS, residential, or similar)
- Good understanding of trauma, attachment, and child development
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Emotional resilience and ability to work in complex environments
- Commitment to trauma-informed and child-centred practice
Desirable
- Postgraduate training or study in psychology, psychotherapy, or counselling
- Experience in residential children’s homes
- Knowledge of autism, ADHD, or other neurodevelopmental differences
- Familiarity with therapeutic models such as DDP, CBT, DBT-informed, or systemic approaches
- Aspiration to progress into further professional training
