This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to begin a career in Trading Standards, helping to tackle the sale of illegal tobacco and vape products and protect consumers, particularly young people, from unsafe and unlawful trading practices. The role includes enrolment on the Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship, accredited by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, providing a recognised pathway into the profession.
About the Role
As a Trading Standards Enforcement Practitioner, you will play a key role in enforcing legislation relating to the sale and supply of tobacco and vaping products. You will help ensure businesses comply with legal requirements and support wider work to protect consumers, safeguard young people and promote fair trading across North Lincolnshire.
This position is ideal for someone looking to build a career in Trading Standards. You will gain practical experience in inspections, investigations, intelligence gathering, evidence handling and working with businesses to secure compliance. You will be supported by experienced officers while developing the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required through the Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship.
About You
We are looking for someone who is eligible for the Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship and who can demonstrate the following:
- GCSE-level English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above)
- Strong attention to detail, numeracy, and organisational skills
- Proficiency in IT (especially Microsoft Office)
- Excellent communication and customer service abilities
- Awareness of criminal law and health & safety
- Ability to understand and apply legislation, guidance and technical information
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Confidence using relevant equipment and digital systems
- Ability to travel across North Lincolnshire to meet the requirements of the role
Employment Details
You will be employed full-time by North Lincolnshire Council.
Candidates must be able to accommodate the requirements of the apprenticeship, including the equivalent of one day per week for apprenticeship study and learning activities.
Your main work base will be Church Square House, Scunthorpe, DN15 6NL.
You will be supported by experienced Trading Standards officers and will have the opportunity to gain practical experience across a range of Trading Standards functions, alongside structured apprenticeship learning.
