Are you passionate about trees, green spaces and making a positive impact on the urban environment? We are looking for an experienced and motivated Arboricultural Officer to play a key role in managing and protecting our tree stock across the city. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape safe, attractive and sustainable parks and green spaces for residents, businesses and visitors.
As our Arboricultural Officer, you will lead a dedicated team of Arborists, Chargehand Arborists and Tree Inspectors, supporting their development through regular Great Performance Conversations and fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Parks and Greenspaces Operations Manager within the Climate and Active Environments team, you will work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and partner organisations to deliver a high-quality arboricultural service across the city.
The role is based on a typical working pattern of Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm. We recognise the importance of work-life balance and can offer flexibility in working arrangements, subject to maintaining appropriate service coverage.
What you'll be doing
- Carrying out tree inspections and surveys, assessing tree condition, risk levels and maintenance requirements.
- Providing expert arboriculture advice to colleagues, elected members, residents and external stakeholders.
- Preparing specifications and programmes for tree works and monitoring contractor performance on site.
- Supporting the management of protected trees, including Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and trees within conservation areas.
- Responding to enquiries, service requests and emergency situations, including storm-related tree incidents.
- Leading and managing a team of Arborists, Chargehand Arborists and Tree Inspectors.
- Conducting Great Performance Conversations and supporting employee development in line with personal development plans and corporate values.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of arboriculture services and the enhancement of the city's green infrastructure.
About you
You will:
- Hold relevant arboriculture qualifications and have practical experience in tree inspection, management and maintenance.
- Be confident in making informed, evidence-based decisions and communicating recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Have experience of leading, motivating and developing teams to achieve excellent outcomes.
- Be comfortable working outdoors throughout the year and travelling across the city as required.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to health and safety, customer service excellence and continuous improvement.

- Leading a small team of Arborists, Chargehand and Tree Inspector, whilst promoting the teams personal development alongside Great Performance Conversations.
About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have…
- Have relevant arboriculture qualifications and practical experience in tree inspection and management.
- Be confident making sound, evidence-based decisions and explaining your recommendations clearly.
- Be comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and able to travel across the city.
- Be committed to health and safety, excellent customer service and our values, including equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Have a positive attitude and great work ethos.
- Hold a valid Full UK Driving Licence.
