About the role
I am looking for a friendly, reliable and patient Personal Assistant to support my teenage son, Ben, who has autism.
The role is primarily about helping Ben to get out into the community, enjoy activities, develop his independence and have regular opportunities for social interaction.
This is not simply a traditional care role. I am looking for somebody who can develop a positive and consistent relationship with Ben and help him enjoy activities and experiences outside the home.
The position could be particularly suitable for a university student studying Psychology, Education, Health & Social Care, Nursing, Social Work or another related subject who would like to gain valuable practical experience of supporting an autistic young person.
What the role involves
The role will include supporting Ben with community-based activities and outings, encouraging his independence and communication, providing reassurance and structure where needed, and helping him participate safely and positively in activities he enjoys.
The most important aspect of the role is developing a consistent and trusting relationship with Ben. An understanding of autism would be beneficial, although personal qualities and a willingness to learn are equally important.
The person I am looking for
You should be patient, dependable, calm and genuinely interested in working with an autistic young person.
You will need to be comfortable supporting Ben in the community and able to remain calm and reassuring if he becomes anxious or overwhelmed.
Previous experience of autism, learning disabilities or additional needs would be helpful but is not necessarily essential for the right person.
The role would particularly suit someone who wants to gain relevant experience while studying towards a career in psychology, education, healthcare, social care or another helping profession.
The successful applicant will be subject to the appropriate DBS and safeguarding checks before working independently with Ben.
Hours
The role is primarily for weekend support, with the possibility of additional hours during school holidays.
There may be some flexibility around the precise hours, which could make the position particularly suitable for somebody studying at university.
Pay
£12.50 per hour, funded through Direct Payments.
