General Summary
The Junior Engineer reports to the Senior Engineer and is responsible for a variety of engineering tasks as described below. Work will primarily be within the North American steel bridge industry. Familiarity with steel structure design and relevant codes is essential. The projects are large and exciting.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Perform steel design calculations and checks on temporary works structures and construction activities.
- Manage drawing submissions and track project status.
- Use Finite Element Analysis software to verify structures are acceptable as loaded.
- Perform static analysis on various structures to determine loading in individual structure members.
- Coordinate work with designers, general contractors, subcontractors, and fabricators.
- Check and revise drawings.
- Manage detailing/design assignments and ensure work is completed on time and under budget.
- Manage detail checking assignments in design and drawings, ensuring work is completed on time and under budget.
- Provide coordination and technical support to subcontractors performing detailing and modelling assignments.
- Develop software programs (e.g., using Visual Basic or AutoLISP) to automate assignments when cost/time effective.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
Work Experience
- Experience detailing and checking steel shop drawings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Mastery of Excel.
- Proficiency with MS Office.
- Proficiency with drafting software including AutoCAD, Inventor, Tekla, PTC Direct Drafting, Rhino/Grasshopper, or other drafting software.
- Proficiency with structural analysis software including Matlab, Lusas, Tekla Structures, SAP, STAAD, or other engineering software.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be able to work at the South Queensferry office. This position requires sitting and working in front of a computer for long periods of time during the day.
