About the role
Rotherham Opportunities College is an independent specialist college in Rotherham supporting young people aged 16 – 25 years with special educational needs and disabilities. Our students may have physical disabilities, cerebral palsy, profound and multiple learning disabilities, autism, sensory impairments and complex communication or health needs.
We are looking for an experienced, compassionate and enthusiastic Specialist Physiotherapist to join us for one day per week during our 39-week academic year. You will work autonomously within a supportive multidisciplinary team, providing assessment, intervention and practical advice that helps students maintain or improve their mobility, comfort, participation and independence.
What you will do
- Undertake specialist physiotherapy assessments and identify each student’s physical and functional needs.
- Develop, deliver and review person-centered physiotherapy programmes with meaningful, measurable outcomes.
- Advise on mobility, transfers, positioning and postural management.
- Advise on wheelchairs, specialist seating, standing equipment, walking aids and other equipment within your professional competence.
- Contribute physiotherapy advice to EHCP outcomes, annual reviews and transition planning.
- Train and support college staff to carry out agreed physiotherapy, mobility and positioning programmes safely.
- Provide specialist input to moving and handling assessments and plans.
- Work closely with students, families, college colleagues, NHS clinicians, equipment services and other professionals.
- Maintain accurate clinical records, monitor progress and respond appropriately to changes in students’ physical presentation.
- Follow professional, safeguarding, consent, mental-capacity and clinical-governance requirements.
- About you
You must have:
- A recognised degree or professional qualification in physiotherapy.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a physiotherapist.
- Relevant post-registration physiotherapy experience.
- Experience of supporting people with physical disabilities, neurological conditions or complex needs.
- Strong clinical assessment, reasoning and care-planning skills.
- The ability to practise autonomously, prioritise effectively and recognise when referral or escalation is required.
- Excellent communication, record-keeping and multidisciplinary working skills.
- A sound understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
Particularly welcome: experience of working with young people aged 16–25, people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, or within specialist education, paediatric, learning-disability, neurological or community services. CSP membership and relevant postgraduate training are desirable.
What we offer
- A permanent, term-time-only position: one 7.5-hour day per week for 39 weeks per year.
- £9,000–£10,500 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience, paid in 12 equal monthly instalments.

Working day: The usual working day will be Wednesday although some flexibility may be helpful for student reviews and multidisciplinary meetings. The postholder will not normally be required to work during college holidays.
