MakeMyHouseGreen is a growing UK solar installation company, backed by Nationwide Building Society. We handle everything in-house — quoting, design, survey, installation — because that's the only way to actually control quality end to end. We're building out our install team, and this role is how we make sure it's built properly.
The Role
This is the senior technical role in our install operation — part manager, part surveyor, part installer. A realistic week:
- Two to three days at a laptop — running remote video surveys with customers and producing the system designs off the back of them, plus being the person the ops team, sales team and installers call when something technical has gone wrong and nobody else can solve it
- One to two days on the tools — installs and revisits, including the complex ones nobody else wants
- One day on site with the team — working alongside our installers to check quality and speed, and coaching where it's needed
Thursdays and Fridays you're in the office with the rest of the team. Field work, installs and any UK travel happen Monday to Wednesday, so on side days are predictable rather than sprung on you.
You'll line-manage 3–5 employed installers and hold our 4 subcontract teams to the same standard. You'll act as our MCS Technical Supervisor, signing installations off to scheme standards. And as we grow, you'll hire the installers who join you.
Most installs are West London and the surrounding counties — Twickenham and the west side of the M25 is our core patch — with UK-wide travel for revisits, complex jobs and quality checks. Very occasional overnight stays and travel fully expensed.
Because you're closer to the work than anyone else in the business, you'll also be our eyes on where we're losing money — kit specification, install time, materials waste. You won't own the margin, but you'll contribute ideas on how to improve it, and we'll act on it.
Be clear about the shape of this job. More than half your week is surveys, designs, technical problem-solving and managing people. If what you want is to install five days a week, this isn't your role — and we'd rather you knew that now. What we're offering is the trade: you keep your hand in on the tools and stay technically sharp, and in return you get to decide how the whole install operation runs.
What We're Looking For
Must-haves:
- Level 3 electrical qualification (NVQ / C&G 2357, 5357, 2365 or EAL equivalent)
- 18th Edition / strong working knowledge of BS 7671
- Genuine speed and quality as a domestic solar PV installer — not one or the other
- Experience leading or managing other installers on site
- Strong technical problem-solving — you're the one who diagnoses what others couldn't
- Properly comfortable at a laptop: running remote video surveys with customers, producing accurate system designs and BoMs from them, and writing up clear technical reports
- Excellent customer manner — you'll be in people's homes and on difficult calls
- Full UK driving licence, and happy to travel and stay away occasionally
- Able to be in our London office every Thursday and Friday
Nice-to-haves:
- Level 3 Solar PV / Battery storage / EESS qualification — if you don't have it, we'll pay for it. Required for MCS Technical Supervisor sign-off
- Experience managing subcontractors or external install teams
- Experience hiring installers, or running formal quality control on installs
- Previous NTP or Technical Supervisor experience under MCS
- Ideas about how install operations should run — you'll get to implement them
