Project Manager
Job Title: Project Manager – Defect, Repair & Refit (Boats up to 21 Metres)
Role Purpose
The Project Manager is responsible for the planning, coordination, and successful delivery of defect rectification, repair, maintenance, and refit projects for commercial and Military boats up to 21 metres in length. The role ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, within budget, and in accordance with contractual obligations, defence standards, and customer expectations.
Acting as the primary interface between the customer, engineering teams, production departments, subcontractors, and suppliers, the Project Manager will oversee projects from initial defect identification through repair, refit, testing, acceptance, and return to operational service.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery
- Manage multiple repair, maintenance, and refit projects simultaneously from receipt of work package through to customer acceptance.
- Manage Cost sheets and Progress sheets, raise additional work as required ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Monitor Contracted prices and costs from suppliers. Identify new supply chains and availability of spares.
- Develop project execution plans, schedules, budgets, and resource requirements.
- Coordinate defect investigations and ensure technical solutions are developed and implemented.
- Monitor project progress against programme milestones and contractual requirements.
- Manage all project documentation, reports, and records throughout the project lifecycle.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Ministry of Defence representatives and other customers.
- Attend project review meetings and provide regular progress reports.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
- Manage customer expectations regarding programme, costs, technical issues, and delivery.
Technical Coordination
- Coordinate engineering, production, quality assurance, procurement, and logistics teams.
- Support technical investigations into equipment failures and vessel defects.
- Ensure engineering changes and repairs are correctly authorised, documented, and implemented.
- Coordinate dockside activities, vessel surveys, inspections, harbour acceptance trials, and sea trials.
- Ensure vessels are returned to operational capability in accordance with agreed acceptance criteria.
Commercial Management
- Monitor project budgets and control expenditure.
- Prepare cost estimates, quotations, and variations.
- Manage contract changes and additional work requests.
- Produce financial forecasts and regular project performance reports.
- Ensure effective cost control throughout project delivery.
Planning & Resource Management
- Produce and maintain detailed project schedules.
- Coordinate labour, subcontractors, equipment, and materials.
- Monitor supplier performance and procurement activities.
- Identify programme risks and implement mitigation plans.
Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental
- Ensure all activities comply with company HSEQ procedures.
- Promote a positive safety culture throughout project execution.
- Ensure compliance with MoD requirements, defence standards, statutory legislation, and marine regulations.
- Support internal and external quality audits.
- Ensure all repair work is completed to the required quality standards before vessel release.
Continuous Improvement
- Capture lessons learned from completed projects.
- Support improvements in repair processes, planning, and project delivery.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise vessel downtime.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Project Management, or a related discipline.
- Project Management Qualification (PMQ), or equivalent project management qualification (or demonstrable equivalent experience).
Essential Experience
- Proven experience managing marine repair, maintenance, refit, or engineering projects.
- Experience delivering projects within the defence, naval, or commercial marine sectors.
- Strong understanding of vessel maintenance, defect rectification, and engineering change management.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Budget management and commercial awareness.
- Experience in project planning and scheduling.
- Knowledge of contract administration and change control.
Desirable Experience
- Experience supporting Ministry of Defence vessels.
- Knowledge of small military craft up to 21 metres.
- Experience of dockyard operations and planned maintenance programmes.
- Understanding of Defence Standards (Def Stan), Lloyd’s Register, or other relevant marine classification requirements.
- Experience coordinating harbour acceptance and sea trials.

Hours of work
· Monday to Thursday: 08:00 to 16:30
· Friday: 08:00 to 15:30
· 39 hour week
Holiday
· 25 days. Initially 23 days and earn one extra day every two years up to 25 days. These days can be bought during the first 4 years and is paid back over the year.
