Funeral Operative
Thornalley Funeral Services is a family business independently owned and managed by the Thornalley family. We cover all aspects of the funeral business and pride ourselves in delivering the very best personal, yet professional, service for the bereaved.
We are looking for an additional full time Funeral Operative who will be based at our King’s Lynn funeral home, although you will be required to assist in our Dersingham and Swaffham funeral homes at times. It is important that you work well as part of a team and play a part in ensuring the service we provide to the bereaved is dignified, friendly and professional.
Your role and responsibilities will involve assisting in the general duties of running a funeral business but predominantly your time will be split between undertaking call-outs and hospital removals, preparing coffins, preparation of the deceased, driving the funeral vehicles and assisting on funerals as a bearer.
You will be responsible for always maintaining a high standard of personal appearance, speech and conduct with no visible tattoo's (whilst wearing a suit). It is vital that you can demonstrate and use your own initiative and be flexible as our working day can change due to the nature of the business.
In this ever changing and interesting role, you will need to have an eye for attention to detail, common sense, a caring, helpful nature and be comfortable with supporting and reassuring the bereaved. Prioritising your work and maintaining confidentiality of the deceased and their families is also vital. You must be able to work well within a busy but friendly team and be comfortable with using IT as we have a computer based funeral system.
Your standard working hours will be a 40 hour week, 8:30am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday. However, you will be on an on-call rota for out of hours call-outs throughout the week and you will be part of a 1 in 4 weekend rota. Please note that call-outs are 24/7, so include unsocial hours.
Due to our call-out procedure, please only apply if you live within 20 minutes of our King's Lynn funeral home (PE30 1QH) as we are always at the place of death within 1 hour following notification of a call-out.
Overtime is paid at time and a half and you will receive a call-out fee for each out of hours call-out. Holiday entitlement is 22 days a year plus bank holidays. On completion of 5, 10 and 15 years continuous service, your entitlement to holidays will increase by one day from the following holiday year.
Due to the unpredictable nature of our work, please consider carefully if you will be able to cope with sudden death scenarios and all aspects of caring for the deceased.
Height to be between 5'10" and 6'2" for bearer purposes.
It is essential that you have a full driver’s license.
