Senior Firmware Engineer – IoT Products (Orbis & Aquam)
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Firmware Engineer to design, develop, optimise, and support embedded firmware for Orbis and Aquam IoT products, including next-generation dataloggers, sensors, and field-deployed monitoring devices.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in low-power embedded systems, cellular IoT communications, secure device connectivity, and high-reliability battery-powered products used in water, wastewater, environmental, and utility monitoring applications.
This role is expected to contribute across the full product lifecycle, from architecture and design through implementation, verification, production support, field diagnostics, and continuous improvement.
Firmware Development
- Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for battery-powered IoT dataloggers, sensors, and utility monitoring devices.
- Implement and optimise communication stacks for LTE Cat 1, LTE-M, NB-IoT, and other cellular or short-range connectivity technologies as required by the product roadmap.
- Integrate sensing technologies such as pressure, flow, acoustic, ultrasonic, temperature, analogue inputs, digital pulse inputs, and other field instrumentation interfaces.
- Develop efficient data logging, power-management, wake/sleep regimes, OTA update mechanisms, diagnostics, and fault recovery behaviours for field-deployed devices.
- Deliver secure and reliable device-to-cloud communications using HTTPS, MQTT, certificates, encryption, and appropriate authentication mechanisms.
The successful candidate must be able and willing to travel between Derby and Sheffield as business needs require, and to undertake occasional international travel to support product development, collaboration, customer engagement, supplier activity, or transfer work, including travel to the USA.
