Waking Nights- Children’s Health Care Worker
Must DRIVE & have OWN CAR. No visa Sponsorship available.
Location: Westhoughton, Bolton, GM
Role Type: Permanent
Hours: 18 hours per week, working on a rolling rota
Hourly Rate: £12.71 | Salary: £11,897.64 per annum (18 hours per week)
We are looking for someone with flexible availability to work across the following shifts:
- Waking nights: Monday, Thursday and Saturday, 9:00 pm–7:00am
- Weekend daytime: Saturday or Sunday, 8:00 am–2:00 pm
Your contracted hours will be allocated across a rolling rota, so you will know your scheduled shifts in advance.
There may be opportunities for additional shifts, which will be discussed and agreed in advance based on your availability, relevant training and service needs.
At Lagan’s Foundation, we are not your typical care provider. We work differently because children need different things.
As a Children’s Play and Healthcare Worker, you will join our internal care team supporting a child with complex health and developmental needs within their own home.
This is a waking-night role where you will provide reassurance, observation and responsive care throughout the night. The child may require regular support and intervention, so you will need to remain awake, alert and able to recognise and respond confidently to changes in their presentation.
You will be working independently within the family home, while being part of a wider care team and working closely with the child’s family.
What the Role May Include
Every child we support is different, and full training and competency assessment will be provided for the care you are required to deliver. Depending on the child's individual care plan, your responsibilities may include:
- Providing attentive waking-night care and monitoring throughout the shift
- Supporting a child with complex health, respiratory and developmental needs
- Monitoring the child’s general wellbeing and completing required observations
- Recognising changes in the child's presentation and responding appropriately in line with their care plan
- Providing respiratory and airway support, which may include suctioning, following appropriate training and competency assessment
- Recognising and responding appropriately to seizures or other changes in health
- Administering prescribed medication in accordance with the care plan and medication procedures
- Supporting enteral feeding where required
- Providing personal care, repositioning and continence support
- Checking and maintaining care equipment and ensuring supplies are ready when needed
- Providing reassurance and comfort when the child wakes or requires support during the night
- Maintaining a calm, safe and comfortable environment
- Keeping clear, accurate and timely care records
- Providing effective handovers to family members and other members of the care team
- Escalating any concerns promptly and following safeguarding and emergency procedures
- Attending regular team meetings, training and supervision
- Working closely with families, colleagues and healthcare professionals
- Being a true ambassador of Lagan’s Foundation – we are one family
Although this is primarily a waking-night healthcare role, our approach remains child-centred. When the child is awake, we want our team to engage with them in a way that is reassuring, appropriate and meaningful. Care is about the whole child, not simply completing clinical tasks.
What Makes You a Good Fit?
We hire people, not just qualifications. We are looking for individuals who naturally live our five values:
Passion – You care deeply about helping children thrive.
Resilience – You can remain calm and responsive during challenging or unexpected situations and be there for the family and your colleagues.
Integrity – You do the right thing, even when no one is watching, follow care plans and procedures, and raise concerns when required.
Good Communication – You listen well, communicate clearly and kindly, and understand the importance of accurate records and effective handovers.
Empathy – You understand that you are working within a family home and can provide compassionate care while respecting the child and their family's routines, preferences and privacy.
In Addition, You Will Need:
- Experience of working with children and young people
- Confidence working independently during a waking-night shift
- The ability to remain calm and respond appropriately when a child’s health needs change
- A willingness and ability to undertake training in the child's individual healthcare needs
- Confidence following detailed care plans, risk assessments and clinical guidance
- A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle with appropriate insurance
- Ideally, a qualification in childcare, play work or a similar area, and/or Level 2 Health and Social Care
- A clear Enhanced DBS – Child & Adult
Experience of supporting children with complex healthcare needs would be an advantage. However, what is equally important to us is finding the right person. Role-specific training and competency assessments will be provided before you are expected to undertake delegated healthcare tasks independently.
