About the Role
We are looking for a reliable, experienced and practical Part-Time Handyperson /Maintenance Person to support the day-to-day maintenance of our small 7-bed supported living service in Reigate, Surrey.
This is a varied, hands-on role and would suit someone who takes pride in their work, can identify and resolve general maintenance issues and, importantly, is confident working independently without needing constant supervision.
You will be responsible for helping us maintain a safe, comfortable and well-presented home for the people we support.
Key Responsibilities
Duties will include:
- Carrying out general repairs and maintenance throughout the property.
- Basic plumbing repairs, such as leaking taps, replacing fittings and resolving minor plumbing issues.
- Undertaking basic electrical maintenance where this is safe, appropriate and within your level of competence.
- Identifying electrical, plumbing or other issues that require a qualified contractor and reporting these promptly.
- Painting and decorating.
- Filling, sanding and repairing walls and woodwork.
- Repairing and adjusting doors, locks, handles, cupboards and other fixtures and fittings.
- Assembling and repairing furniture.
- Replacing damaged or worn fixtures and fittings.
- Carrying out minor carpentry and general DIY tasks.
- Checking lighting and replacing bulbs and other appropriate consumable items.
- Carrying out routine health and safety/environmental checks.
- Completing maintenance and health & safety records accurately.
- Identifying potential hazards and taking appropriate action or escalating concerns.
- Supporting routine fire safety and property checks as directed.
- Checking the general condition of the building and reporting repairs that require specialist contractors.
- Carrying out basic external maintenance and keeping outside areas safe and presentable.
- Responding to general maintenance requests in a timely manner.
- Ensuring tools, equipment and work areas are left safe and secure after completing work.
- Liaising with the Service Manager regarding outstanding repairs and maintenance priorities.
- Supporting access for external contractors where required.
- Keeping appropriate records of work completed.
About You
We are particularly looking for someone who is self-motivated and able to work independently.
You should be able to attend the service, assess routine maintenance issues, prioritise your workload and complete appropriate repairs without needing to be constantly directed.
You will ideally have:
- Previous experience in a handyperson, maintenance, property maintenance or similar role.
- Good general DIY and practical maintenance skills.
- Basic plumbing knowledge and experience.
- Good decorating skills.
- Basic carpentry and repair skills.
- An understanding of general building and property maintenance.
- A good understanding of workplace health and safety.
- The ability to recognise when work requires a suitably qualified tradesperson rather than attempting work outside your competence.
- Good problem-solving skills.
- The ability to organise and prioritise your own workload.
- A reliable and responsible approach to work.
- Good communication skills.
- Respect for the privacy, dignity and home environment of the people we support.
Experience working within supported living, residential care, social care, housing or a similar environment would be advantageous but is not essential.
Important
As you will be working within people's home, we require someone who is professional, respectful and understands the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries.
Any specialist electrical, gas or other regulated work must only be undertaken where the individual holds the appropriate qualifications and competence. Where specialist work is required, you will be expected to identify and report the issue so that an appropriately qualified contractor can be arranged.
There can be some flexibility regarding how the hours are worked, which can be discussed at interview.
Occasional additional hours may be available depending on the maintenance requirements of the service.
