Job Purpose
The SEMH Teacher will provide high-quality, personalised teaching and learning for young people accessing Dale Futures.
The post holder will specialise in delivering English and Maths across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, supporting pupils who have experienced barriers to education, including social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), SEND needs, disrupted education and difficulties accessing mainstream settings.
Alongside teaching responsibilities, the post holder will contribute to safeguarding practice and support the admissions and transition process, ensuring pupils receive a safe, appropriate and successful placement experience.
The successful candidate will be passionate about improving outcomes for vulnerable young people through strong relationships, high expectations and inclusive practice.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning – English and Maths
- Plan and deliver engaging, ambitious and personalised English and Maths lessons.
- Assess pupil starting points and use diagnostic information to plan appropriate learning pathways.
- Deliver programmes that support pupils to make academic progress and achieve recognised qualifications where appropriate.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of pupils with SEMH, SEND and additional learning needs.
- Develop pupils’ confidence, resilience and independence as learners.
- Create a calm, structured and inclusive classroom environment.
- Promote high expectations of behaviour, effort and achievement.
Assessment and Progress
- Complete baseline assessments and identify individual learning priorities.
- Monitor, track and report pupil progress in English and Maths.
- Provide regular feedback to support improvement.
- Contribute to pupil reviews with schools, families and professionals.
- Maintain accurate records of attainment, progress and interventions.
SEMH and Relational Practice
- Build positive, trusting relationships with young people.
- Use trauma-informed and relational approaches to support engagement.
- Understand the barriers preventing pupils from accessing education.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, confidence and readiness to learn.
- Work alongside the wider team to develop personalised support strategies.
Safeguarding Responsibilities
The post holder will contribute to maintaining a strong safeguarding culture across Dale Futures.
Responsibilities will include:
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people.
- Identify, record and report safeguarding concerns in line with Dale Futures procedures.
- Contribute to safeguarding meetings and discussions where appropriate.
- Support the implementation of safeguarding plans and risk assessments.
- Maintain professional curiosity and recognise indicators of vulnerability, exploitation, neglect and harm.
- Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and wider team.
The post holder will not replace the responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead unless specifically appointed to that role.
Admissions and Transition Responsibilities
The post holder will support the admissions process to ensure pupils experience a safe and effective transition into Dale Futures.
Responsibilities include:
- Support the review of referrals and pupil information.
- Attend admissions discussions with schools, families and professionals.
- Support initial assessments and identify learning needs.
- Contribute to transition planning and pupil induction.
- Ensure relevant information is shared with staff to support successful placements.
- Support placement reviews and reintegration planning.
Team Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants and leaders.
- Contribute to curriculum development and improvement.
- Share expertise in English, Maths and SEMH practice.
- Participate in staff meetings, training and professional development.
- Support a positive culture where every young person has the opportunity to succeed.
Person Specification/Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Experience teaching English and/or Maths.
- Experience working with young people with SEMH, SEND or additional needs.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
- Experience adapting teaching to meet individual needs.

Desirable
- Experience working in Alternative Provision.
- Experience supporting admissions, referrals or transitions.
- GCSE/A Level subject expertise in English or Maths.
- Knowledge of Functional Skills, GCSE pathways or vocational accreditation.
- Safeguarding training beyond Level 1.
