Job Purpose:
The GPS Operative supports the delivery of accurate surveying and data‑capture activities across drainage, highways, and infrastructure projects. Working as part of a specialist operational team, you will be responsible for the safe and precise use of GPS equipment to collect, record, and verify asset data in line with Crown Plus standards and client specifications.
This role is essential to ensuring that drainage and asset information is captured correctly, enabling high‑quality reporting, compliance, and decision‑making across the business.
Accountabilities:
Surveying & Data Capture
- Operate GPS surveying equipment to capture accurate positional and asset data.
- Record drainage and infrastructure locations in accordance with project requirements.
- Verify data quality and ensure all information is logged correctly.
- Support CCTV and Jetting teams by providing accurate GPS coordinates for assets, access points, and survey locations.
- Assist with mapping, plotting, and transferring data into required formats or systems.
Operational Support
- Work collaboratively with site teams to ensure smooth delivery of works.
- Assist in locating manholes, chambers, and drainage assets using GPS and site plans.
- Support the GPS Manager in planning daily survey routes and priorities.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, supervisors, and site personnel regarding survey progress and findings.
Health, Safety & Environment
- Follow all Crown Plus Health & Safety procedures and site‑specific requirements.
- Undertake Near Miss reporting and contribute to a positive safety culture.
- Carry out pre‑shift checks on equipment and ensure GPS units are maintained, charged, and stored correctly.
- Work safely around highways, utilities, and live operational environments.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily records of survey activities, locations, and asset data.
- Report any discrepancies, missing assets, or access issues to the GPS Manager.
- Ensure all data is submitted promptly and accurately for processing.
Skills, Training and Knowledge:
- Experience working in highways, utilities, drainage, or construction environments.
- Ability to operate GPS surveying equipment (training can be provided).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data recording.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Understanding of Health & Safety requirements on site.
- Flexibility to travel and work across multiple UK locations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to high standards of work.
- Safety‑conscious with strong attention to detail.
- Practical, hands‑on approach with the ability to problem‑solve on site.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- CSCS card
- Confined Space certification.
- OS26x
- Experience with asset mapping, surveying, or GIS systems.
This is site-based role covering multiple locations around the UK, with key contracts within the Midlands (Area 7 & Area 9) and South West (Area 1 & 2).
The nature of the role will mainly entail working weekday nights, as such you will be expected to work away from home for periods of time.
