M W Nice Ltd is a family owned and run timber merchant's supplying fencing, timber and landscaping products to trade and retail customers across the UK.
We are looking for a yard operative to join the busy team at our Culford, Bury St Edmunds yard.
The role is hands-on, practical and customer-facing.
Day-to-day duties of this role:
1. Loading & Unloading Deliveries
- Unloading deliveries from suppliers (using forklifts or manual handling)
- Checking deliveries against paperwork
- Inspecting all products for damage or defects
- Stacking all stock materials safely in designated areas
2. Picking & Preparing Customer Orders
- Locating products in the yard
- Assembling orders accurately and efficiently
- Wrapping or banding materials for safe transport
- Loading customer vehicles or delivery trucks
- Cutting timber to size (If and when required)
Accuracy is very important - mistakes can be costly
3. Operating Machinery
- Forklifts (Requires counterbalance/rough terrain/teletruck forklift licences)
- Telehandler (Requires a telehandler licence)
- Cutting equipment (Crosscut saw)
Safety training is mandatory
4. Customer Service
- Assisting trade and retails customers in the yard
- Giving basic product guidance (e.g types of timber/Sheet materials/ types of treatment)
- Maintaining a friendly, professional manner at all times
- Provide a fast accurate turn around for collection customers
Customer interaction is a big part of the role
5. Yard Maintenance & Housekeeping
- Keeping the yard clean, tidy and organised
- Removing waste timber and packaging using skips/ bins
- Ensuring aisles and yard are clear/safe at all times
- Following health and safety procedures at all times
A tidy yard reduces accidents and improves efficiency
6. Stock Control
- Monitoring stock levels
- Reporting low stock
- Assisting with stock takes
- Rotating stock
- Reporting any damaged stock
7. Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Wearing PPE (Steel-toe boots, hi-vis)
- Following manual handling procedures
- Ensuring safety stacking/storing of products
- Reporting any hazards
Safety is critical due to heavy materials and machinery
Skills Needed
- Physical Fitness

- Reliability and Punctuality
Full-time role based around the branch opening hours of 7am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Applicant must be flexible to work additional hours when required.
The salary on offer for this role is £35,100 per annum basic before overtime.
After completing and demonstrating strong teamwork, productivity and reliability over a period of 6 months, a permanent position will be offered.
