We are looking for a reliable and caring Cook / Kitchen Assistant to join our residential care home team. The successful candidate will help prepare and serve nutritious, well-balanced meals for our residents while maintaining high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and safety. The role involves working closely with care staff and management to ensure residents’ individual dietary needs, preferences, allergies and any specific eating and drinking requirements are followed.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook and serve nutritious meals for residents in accordance with planned menus.
- Prepare meals according to residents’ individual dietary requirements, allergies and preferences.
- Follow any specific dietary guidance provided for residents, including modified-texture diets where applicable.
- Ensure food is prepared, stored and served safely and at appropriate temperatures.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the kitchen, food preparation and storage areas.
- Complete required kitchen and food safety records, including fridge/freezer temperatures and food temperature checks.
- Follow food hygiene, infection prevention and health and safety procedures at all times.
- Check food stock levels, rotate stock appropriately and report items that need ordering.
- Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries safely.
- Support with washing dishes, utensils and kitchen equipment and ensure they are stored appropriately.
- Work cooperatively with care staff to ensure residents receive meals safely and at the appropriate times.
- Report any concerns regarding a resident’s eating, drinking or dietary requirements to the appropriate senior member of staff.
- Follow the care home’s policies, procedures and safeguarding requirements.
- Carry out other reasonable kitchen duties required for the smooth running of the home.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience working in a kitchen, care home or similar environment is desirable but not essential full training will be provided
- Basic knowledge of food hygiene and food safety requirements.
- Understanding of special diets and modified-texture meals is desirable; training can be provided.
- Ability to maintain a clean, safe and organised kitchen.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable, organised and able to work independently when required.
- A respectful and person-centred approach when working within a residential care environment. Food Hygiene qualification is desirable, although appropriate training can be provided.
- The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a welcoming, safe and homely environment where residents’ dignity, individual choices and nutritional needs are respected.
Pay: £12.71-£13.00 per hour
