Machine Operator – Laundry
Job Purpose
The Machine Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the laundry washing and drying equipment, ensuring towels and other linen are processed correctly and delivered to the folding team on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Load dirty towels and linen into the correct washing machines according to the required load and programme.
- Select and use the correct washing programme for each type of towel or linen.
- Check that the correct chemicals are available and being used during the wash process.
- Monitor machines during the washing cycle and report any faults, errors or unusual issues to the supervisor.
- Safely unload clean towels and linen from the washing machines.
- Transfer washed towels to the correct dryers without unnecessary delays.
- Load and operate dryers using the correct programme and settings.
- Check that towels are properly dried before sending them to the folding area.
- Move dried towels to the correct folding/production area and hand them over to the folder.
- Separate towels by type where required, such as bath towels, hand towels, sweat towels, robes and other linen.
- Keep the machine and surrounding work area clean, organised and free from unnecessary waste.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and machine operating instructions.
- Report damaged, stained, heavily soiled or rejected towels to the supervisor.
- Work efficiently to maintain the required production levels and avoid unnecessary machine downtime.
- Communicate with supervisors and other production staff to ensure a smooth flow from washing to drying and folding.
- Follow instructions regarding priority orders and urgent production requirements.
- Assist with general laundry and production duties when required.
Health & Safety
- Always follow the company’s health and safety procedures.
- Use appropriate PPE where required.
- Never operate machinery unless properly trained and authorised.
- Report machine faults, chemical issues, spills or safety concerns immediately.
- Take care when handling wet and heavy loads to avoid injury.
Key Skills & Requirements
- Previous laundry or machine-operating experience is desirable but full training can be provided.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
- Good attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and machine programmes correctly.
- Physically able to load and unload laundry and move heavy bags/cages when required.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a team.
- Good communication with supervisors and colleagues.
- Commitment to maintaining quality, productivity and hygiene standards.

Pay: £12.71-£13.71 per hour
