About Tutor First
Tutor First is a small group tutoring centre based in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. Founded in 2019, we specialise in English and Maths tuition for children aged 5–16. What makes us different is simple: we keep groups small (maximum 3 students per tutor), so every child gets genuine attention and a session that feels personal.
We are a close-knit team, and we take pride in the relationships we build — with our students, their families, and each other. Our tutors are not just teachers; they are confidence builders.
We are looking for a primary school tutor to join us before September 2026 and become a valued part of what we do.
The Role
You will deliver small group English and Maths sessions to primary-aged children (ages 5–11).
This is a self-employed contractor position. The core commitment is 3 evenings per week, with the opportunity to take on additional slots if you want them — including Saturday mornings (9am–1:30pm) and daytime sessions for home-educated students.
Sessions are one hour long and take place at our centre in Cleckheaton. You will not be required to travel to students.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated sessions in English and Maths for primary-aged children (ages 5–11)
- Work within our 1:3 tutor-to-student ratio to ensure every child receives focused support
- Tailor your teaching to individual learning goals set for each student
- Communicate with the wider team to maintain consistency in the curriculum we deliver
- Contribute to regular progress tracking and assessment weeks (every 6–8 weeks)
- Help build students' confidence alongside their academic skills
Requirements
- A minimum of a basic teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, QTS, HLTA, CACHE, or equivalent)
- Experience teaching or tutoring primary school-aged children in English and/or Maths
- Strong subject knowledge across the primary curriculum
- Ability to work independently and plan sessions effectively
- A warm, patient, and encouraging approach with young learners
- An up-to-date DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
- Reliable availability for a minimum of 3 evenings per week

Hours
Core: 3 evenings per week (Monday to Friday, peak hours 3:40pm–8:20pm) Additional: Saturday mornings (9am–1:30pm) and daytime sessions available for those who want them

Our Process
Successful applicants will be invited to an informal chat followed by a short teaching observation. All tutors join on a 6-month self-employed trial, with regular check-ins and support throughout.
Tutor First is committed to safeguarding. All tutors must hold a valid enhanced DBS certificate before working with students.
