Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant Officer (Self Assessment & MTD Specialist) to join our tax team. In this role, you will manage personal tax compliance for a diverse portfolio of individual clients, sole traders, partnerships, and property landlords. Using QuickBooks, Xero, and TaxCalc, you will prepare and submit SA100 tax returns, ensure compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA requirements, and advise clients on their tax obligations and HMRC deadlines.
Duties
- Self Assessment Return Preparation: Prepare, review, and submit individual SA100 tax returns and supplementary pages (SA102 employment, SA103 self-employment, SA105 property, SA108 capital gains, SA109 residence) using TaxCalc, ensuring full statutory compliance.
- Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA Compliance: Manage client quarterly submissions and final declarations under MTD for ITSA rules. Ensure sole traders and landlords meet MTD quarterly update deadlines and maintain compliant digital records.
- Digital Bookkeeping & Software Integration: Reconcile and audit client records within QuickBooks and Xero. Ensure digital data, bank feeds, and sales/expense categories flow accurately into TaxCalc for tax computations.
- Client Onboarding & Digital Migration: Assist clients in migrating from manual or paper records to QuickBooks or Xero, setting up MTD-compliant workflows and training clients on digital record-keeping.
- Tax Calculations & Reliefs: Compute Income Tax, Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance, Capital Gains Tax, and Student Loan liabilities. Identify and apply applicable allowances and reliefs (e.g., Marriage Allowance, Pension Contributions, Gift Aid, Trading Allowance).
- Deadline & Payment Advisory: Issue timely reminders for key deadlines (31st October paper, 31st January online, and quarterly MTD updates). Calculate and notify clients of their Payments on Account obligations due on 31st January and 31st July.
- HMRC Agent Management: Act as the primary HMRC point of contact. Process 64-8 agent authorizations, register clients for Self Assessment, resolve PAYE coding notice discrepancies, and handle HMRC queries or penalty appeals.
- Review & Mentorship: Review computations and quarterly updates prepared by junior staff or tax trainees, providing guidance on tax procedures and software usage in TaxCalc, QuickBooks, and Xero.
Experience & Qualifications
- UK Tax Experience: Proven experience in a UK accountancy practice handling personal tax compliance, sole trader accounts, and landlord tax affairs.
- Software Expertise: Advanced hands-on proficiency in TaxCalc, QuickBooks Online, and Xero is essential.
- MTD & UK Tax Knowledge: Strong understanding of current UK Income Tax rules, Capital Gains Tax, National Insurance, and MTD for ITSA regulations.
- Qualifications (Desirable): AAT qualified, University Degree/part-qualified, or ACCA trainee.
Pay: £26,000.00-£29,000.00 per year
