Trainee Welder / Fabricator / Labourer
Location: Near Tewkesbury
Job Type: Temporary, with the opportunity to become permanent
We are a small, independent fabrication business based near Tewkesbury, and I am looking for a Trainee Welder / Fabricator / Labourer to join me and become an important part of the business.
About the Role
This is a hands-on trainee position and would suit someone who is looking to learn a skilled trade and develop a long-term career in welding and fabrication.
You do not need to be an experienced welder. I am looking for the right person who is reliable, practical, hardworking and genuinely interested in learning.
At present, I am the only person working in the business, so you would be working directly alongside me on a day-to-day basis.
This is an important point about the role. You won't be joining a large workshop with a team of people around you. Instead, you will be working closely with me, learning directly from me and gradually taking on more responsibility as your skills and experience develop.
Because of this, I am looking for someone who is switched-on, trustworthy, willing to learn and able to take instruction. You will need to be comfortable working closely with one other person and, as you become more experienced, working independently when required.
The aim is to find someone who can learn the trade, grow with the business and potentially become a permanent and important member of the company.
The Work
The business carries out fabrication work for a wide range of sectors, including pharmaceutical, entertainment, travel and many others.
This provides a very varied working environment and the opportunity to learn different fabrication techniques while working with:
- Mild steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminium
- Sheet metal
The work includes both workshop fabrication and occasional site work, so the role is varied and hands-on.
The workshop is small but very well equipped, with:
- CNC plasma cutting table
- CNC press brake
- Fabrication/fixture table
- Forklift
- Company delivery vehicle
- Full range of hand and power tools
Your Duties
Working directly alongside me, your duties will include:
- Assisting with general fabrication and welding work
- Learning welding and fabrication techniques
- Learning to work with sheet metal
- Learning how to read and understand fabrication drawings where required
- Using hand and power tools
- Preparing, moving and handling materials
- Assisting with fabrication and assembly
- Keeping the workshop clean, tidy and organised
- Assisting with on-site work and installations when required
- Loading and unloading materials
- Carrying out deliveries using company vehicles
- General workshop and labouring duties
- Following health and safety procedures
- Taking on additional responsibilities as your skills develop
- Carrying out overtime when required
Who I Am Looking For
The right attitude is more important than previous welding experience.
I am looking for someone who:
- Is 21 or over – this is an insurance requirement for driving company vehicles
- Has a full UK driving licence
- Is confident driving a large dropside van
- Ideally has some experience using basic hand tools such as drills, grinders and hammers
- Is practical and comfortable working with their hands
- Is physically fit and comfortable with manual work
- Is reliable and punctual
- Learns quickly and is willing to listen and take instruction
- Is confident asking questions when they don't understand something
- Has a good attitude towards health and safety
- Can work closely alongside another person
- Is able to use their initiative and eventually work independently
- Has good problem-solving skills
- Is proactive and takes pride in their work
- Is willing to carry out overtime when required
- Ideally lives in or around Tewkesbury
