About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join the delivery team on a major civil engineering project within a naval base.
The successful candidate will have strong practical and technical experience in ground engineering, particularly ground anchors, and will be responsible for supporting the safe and effective delivery of geotechnical works on site.
This is a contract position inside IR35, offering the opportunity to work on a technically challenging and security-sensitive civils project within an experienced engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide geotechnical engineering support throughout the construction phase of the project.
- Oversee and support the installation of ground anchors, including temporary and permanent anchor systems.
- Review and interpret geotechnical investigation information, drawings, specifications and design documentation.
- Monitor ground conditions and identify potential geotechnical risks during construction.
- Work closely with the site team, temporary works engineers, designers and specialist subcontractors.
- Review construction methodologies and provide technical input where required.
- Monitor ground anchor installation, testing and verification activities.
- Review anchor testing results and ensure works comply with project specifications and relevant standards.
- Assist with the investigation and resolution of technical issues encountered during construction.
- Provide technical advice on ground conditions, stability and geotechnical construction methods.
- Support the management of geotechnical risks and ensure appropriate controls are implemented.
- Review and contribute to RAMS, inspection and test plans and other construction documentation.
- Maintain accurate site records, inspection reports and technical documentation.
- Liaise with subcontractors and specialist ground engineering contractors.
- Ensure works are delivered in accordance with approved designs, specifications, quality requirements and health and safety standards.
- Provide regular technical updates to the project and engineering management teams.
Essential Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Proven experience working as a Geotechnical Engineer on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
- Strong hands-on experience with ground anchors, including installation, testing and verification.
- Good understanding of ground engineering principles and construction methodologies.
- Experience working with specialist geotechnical subcontractors.
- Ability to interpret geotechnical reports, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of construction health, safety and quality requirements.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a site-based construction environment.
Desirable Experience
- Experience with temporary and permanent works.
- Experience with retaining structures, piling, soil nailing or other ground improvement techniques.
- Previous experience on major infrastructure, defence, marine or other complex civils projects.
- Experience working in highly regulated or security-sensitive environments.
- Knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry guidance relating to geotechnical and ground anchor works.
- Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
Project Environment
The project is being delivered within an operational naval base, so the successful candidate must be comfortable working within a highly controlled and security-conscious environment.
Previous defence, naval, military or secure-site experience would be advantageous, although candidates with strong relevant geotechnical and ground anchor experience from other major civils projects will also be considered.
