Alcedo Care is expanding its Children’s Residential Services, and we are looking for compassionate, reliable and resilient Waking Night Residential Support Workers who hold a full UK driving licence to join our dedicated team in St Helens.
Due to the nature of the role and the needs of the children and young people we support, team members may be required to drive as part of their duties, including responding to unexpected or emergency situations and safely transporting young people when required. For this reason, holding a full, valid UK driving licence and being able to drive is an essential requirement of the position.

As a Waking Night Residential Support Worker, you will remain awake and available throughout the night to help maintain a safe, calm and nurturing environment for children and young people with emotional and behavioural needs.
You will provide reassurance and practical support when needed, respond appropriately to incidents or concerns, and ensure that each young person’s individual care plan and nighttime routine are followed.
As driving forms an essential part of this position, you must hold a full, valid UK driving licence and be willing and able to drive when required as part of your duties.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Remaining awake, alert and available throughout the full night shift
- Completing regular welfare and safety checks
- Supporting young people who wake during the night or require reassurance
- Promoting a calm, safe and settled nighttime environment
- Responding to incidents, challenging behaviour or safeguarding concerns appropriately
- Using positive behaviour-support and de-escalation techniques
- Following individual care plans, risk assessments and safeguarding procedures
- Driving as part of your duties when required, including transporting young people safely in accordance with company procedures
- Responding appropriately to situations where transport may be required during the night
- Administering medication where required and appropriately trained
- Completing accurate nightly records, reports and incident documentation
- Preparing clear handovers for the incoming day team
- Completing light household tasks to help keep the home clean, safe and welcoming
- Supporting morning routines toward the end of the shift where required
- Building positive and trusting relationships with the children and young people in our care
Essential requirements:
- A full, valid UK driving licence
- The ability and willingness to drive as part of your duties
- A genuine passion for supporting children and young people
- The ability to remain calm, resilient and supportive during challenging situations
- A strong understanding of professional boundaries and safeguarding
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to complete accurate records and reports
- Reliability and the ability to stay awake and attentive throughout the night
- A positive approach to teamwork and person-centred care
Previous experience in an Ofsted-registered children’s home or a similar care setting is desirable but not essential.
Please note that because driving is an essential function of this role, we are only able to progress applications from candidates who hold a full, valid UK driving licence and are able to drive as part of their employment duties.
This position is specifically for waking-night shifts.
You will be required to remain awake and carry out your responsibilities throughout the full shift. This is not a sleep-in position.
Shift patterns will be discussed during the interview process.
