We are looking for a skilled Technical Author to bridge the gap between complex engineering concepts and clear, accessible documentation for our clients installation engineers and compliance bodies.
Role Overview
Working closely with our internal Engineering and Product Design teams, the Technical Author will take full ownership of creating, developing, maintaining and updating all technical documentation across our entire range of dust and fume extraction equipment.
You will translate complex technical specifications, mechanical designs, and regulatory safety frameworks into clear, precise user manuals, technical files, maintenance guides, and compliance documentation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Content Development & Technical Writing
- Write, review, and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including:
- Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (O&M) Manuals
- Technical Files & Data Sheets
- System Commissioning Guides & Test Procedures
- Troubleshooting and Safety Guides
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and design engineers to gather accurate product data, specifications, and CAD drawings.
- Translate complex engineering concepts into clear, concise, and structured English for varied technical levels (from operators to qualified engineers).
2. Compliance & Regulatory Standards
- Ensure all technical literature aligns strictly with relevant UK, EU, and international health and safety standards.
- Author and maintain technical files required for UKCA and CE marking compliance.
- Work alongside safety specialists to ensure proper documentation of ATEX / DSEAR compliance (where applicable to dust/fume environments), Machinery Directives, and COSHH recommendations (e.g., HSG258 guidelines).
- Keep documentation updated in line with evolving legislation, machinery safety standards, and manufacturing updates.
3. Information Architecture & Maintenance
- Establish and maintain a standardised documentation control system (version control, templates, and style guidelines).
- Conduct regular reviews of existing product documentation to ensure accuracy, safety warnings, and component specifications are kept up to date.
- Incorporate visual aids (exploded diagrams, schematics, photos, and vector graphics) to complement text and enhance usability.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Engineering Background: HNC/HND, Degree, or equivalent practical background in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering.
- Technical Writing Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience writing technical documentation within an industrial , or manufacturing sector.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of UKCA and CE marking processes, Machinery Directives, and relevant UK Health & Safety regulations.
Desirable
- Prior experience with dust and fume extraction equipment, LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) systems, or industrial air filtration technology.
- Knowledge of COSHH (HSG258) guidance, ATEX/ directives for explosive dusts/gases, and pressure vessel regulations.
- Familiarity with structured authoring (DITA / XML) and Component Content Management Systems (CCMS).
