Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Support Tutor to provide tailored emotional, social, and behavioural support to students in an alternative education setting in Ashington. The successful candidate will work with learners who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them build resilience, manage emotions, and engage positively with learning through 1-2-1 sessions and small group activities. Duties
- Deliver personalised SEMH support sessions in 1-2-1 and small group formats, adapted to individual and group needs
- Assess students’ emotional and behavioural strengths, identifying triggers and areas for development
- Create engaging support plans and resources to promote emotional regulation, social skills, and positive behaviour
- Track student progress in SEMH areas and provide feedback to students, parents, and the wider team as needed
- Assist with emotional wellbeing, crisis intervention, and integration into learning activities
- Cultivate a safe, nurturing environment that builds trust, self-esteem, and motivation
- Keep detailed records of sessions, attendance, incidents, and progress updates
Skills
- Experience in SEMH support or mentoring in educational or youth settings
- Excellent communication skills to de-escalate situations and encourage open dialogue
- Background working with children or young adults with SEMH needs, including in alternative education
- Flexibility to adjust approaches for different learning styles, group dynamics, and individual challenges
- High levels of patience, empathy, resilience, and strong organisational abilities
- Skill in forming strong relationships with students, and teams to drive positive outcomes
