Machinist (Conventional Manual Turning & Milling)

The Role
Working within our machine shop, you will be responsible for setting and operating conventional centre lathes and manual milling machines to manufacture high-quality precision components to engineering drawings.
Your responsibilities will include:
· Setting and operating conventional centre lathes and manual milling machines.
· Manufacturing precision components in accordance with engineering drawings and quality specifications.
· Selecting and setting appropriate cutting tools, work holding and machine speeds and feeds.
· Machining a wide range of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, duplex and super duplex alloys.
· Carrying out turning, boring, drilling, threading, keyway cutting and general milling operations.
· Inspecting finished components using precision measuring equipment to ensure compliance with drawing tolerances.
· Producing one-off and small batch components to a consistently high standard.
· Identifying and resolving machining issues to maintain productivity and quality.
· Carrying out routine machine maintenance and keeping machinery, tooling and work areas clean and well maintained.
· Supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the machine shop.
· Working closely with colleagues, Production Team Leaders and the Engineering team to meet production schedules and quality requirements.
About You
We're looking for an experienced machinist who takes pride in producing precision components to a high standard. The role is predominantly conventional turning, so you'll be confident setting and operating manual centre lathes, while also being willing to support manual milling and CNC machining when required.
Essential
· Minimum of three years' experience operating conventional manual centre lathes within a precision engineering or manufacturing environment.
· Apprenticeship trained or equivalent recognised engineering qualification.
· Strong conventional turning skills, including facing, parallel turning, taper turning, boring, drilling, threading and general precision machining.
· Ability to independently set up work holding, select cutting tools, and determine appropriate speeds and feeds.
· Experience machining precision components from engineering drawings to close tolerances.
· Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, verniers, bore gauges and dial indicators.
· Experience machining a variety of materials, including mild steel and stainless steel.
· Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
Desirable
· Experience operating conventional manual milling machines.
· Experience machining duplex and super duplex stainless steels.
· Previous experience setting and operating CNC lathes and/or CNC machining centres.
· Working knowledge of Mazatrol, Haas or Fanuc control systems.
· Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement techniques.
