Job Purpose
We are seeking a reliable, practical, and experienced Maintenance Engineer to support the smooth operation of our busy flapjack bakery. This flexible-hours role is responsible for maintaining production equipment, carrying out planned preventative maintenance, responding to breakdowns, and completing general site maintenance to ensure production operates safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime.
The successful candidate will be hands-on, adaptable, and capable of working independently across a wide variety of engineering and maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Machinery Maintenance & Repairs
- Install, commission, maintain, and repair production/ancillary machinery and equipment.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules to minimise equipment failures.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs efficiently to reduce production downtime.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns when required.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and report recurring equipment issues.
Production Equipment
- Maintain and repair bakery production equipment, including ovens and associated equipment.
- Carry out repairs to bakery racks and other production equipment as required.
- Repair and maintain commercial dishwasher and associated equipment.
- Support machinery improvements and modifications to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Assist with machinery installation and relocation projects as required.
Fabrication & Engineering
- Undertake basic fabrication work using appropriate workshop equipment.
- Perform welding repairs and light fabrication for racks, frames, guards and site equipment.
- Manufacture or modify simple brackets, guards, and replacement parts where appropriate.
Building & Site Maintenance
- Carry out general site maintenance and handyman duties.
- Complete basic plumbing repairs, including pipework, taps, valves, and drainage issues.
- Maintain factory fixtures, fittings, doors, shelving, and other building infrastructure.
- Identify and report any building defects requiring specialist contractors.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all machinery remains safe to operate and complies with current Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.
- Carry out repairs in accordance with food safety, hygiene, and engineering standards.
- Ensure machine guards and safety devices remain operational and compliant.
- Follow safe systems of work, including lock-off and isolation procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organised working environment.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and maintenance processes.
- Assist in reducing downtime through proactive maintenance and root cause analysis.
- Work closely with production teams to minimise disruption during maintenance activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven maintenance engineering experience ideally within a manufacturing or food production environment.
- Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding skills.
- Experience carrying out preventative maintenance programmes.
- Welding and basic fabrication skills.
- General handyman experience, including basic plumbing and site maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload effectively.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements in an industrial environment.
Desirable
- Experience working within a bakery or food manufacturing environment.
- Electrical fault-finding experience or relevant electrical qualifications.
- Knowledge of food hygiene standards.

Working Hours
This is a flexible-hours position designed to support production requirements.
Working hours can be arranged by mutual agreement and may include:
- Flexible daytime hours.
- Early mornings or evenings when required.
- Occasional weekend work for planned maintenance or emergency repairs.
- Availability to respond to urgent equipment breakdowns where reasonably required.
