Job Description

In 2025 we launched our new sustainability strategy which has set out priorities over the next five years, a key pillar of which was our commitment to achieving net zero.
A Sustainability Coordinator is sought to be the focal point for sustainability and environmental matters, leading the delivery of local initiatives and supporting the implementation of AGS’ sustainability strategy at Southampton Airport.
Working across a broad spectrum of sustainability and environmental topics, including climate change, carbon management, energy, waste, biodiversity, water, air quality, resource efficiency, noise, and stakeholder engagement, the Sustainability Coordinator will drive the local sustainability agenda and support the delivery of AGS's strategic objectives. Delivering initiatives in pursuit of excellence and driving actions to ensure continuous improvement.
At the local airport, the Sustainability Coordinator will engage proactively with staff, third parties and other stakeholders, to provide oversight of sustainability performance. Helping to ensure AGS Airports and its associated business partners fully comply with all relevant statutory requirements, environmental legislation and sustainability performance standards.
The role will also support the development of sustainability knowledge, skills and capability across the airport community, while providing opportunities for the post holder to broaden their experience, develop professional expertise and build a strong foundation across the sustainability and environmental disciplines.
Principle accountabilities

Act as a focus for the delivery of sustainability initiatives, policies and plans.

Gather data and report in line with planning condition requirements.

Identify environmental risks and put in place control measures to mitigate those risks.

Monitor and report on utilities and waste performance in line with internal reporting requirements.

Lead process improvement in all areas of environment and sustainability, leading on ways to enhance the management of operational environment issues and sustainability with a particular focus on net-zero/resource efficiency.

Work with the relevant internal and external parties to deliver projects as required.

Assist the operational business with environmental queries.

Effective liaison with regulatory authorities on all aspects of environment, sustainability & corporate responsibility including submission of statutory reports (e.g. SECR and ESOS) and adherence to strict environmental licencing conditions.

Ensure robust SMART environmental targets for environment and sustainability performance are monitored. Provide appropriate challenge and guidance to target owners at target setting.

Provide the Sustainability Manager and Operations leadership locally with monthly updates on environmental performance.

Influence the business and wider airport community to ensure that environment performance standards are adopted and followed.

Provide technical and general advice to the business and third parties on compliance with standards and procedures.

Ensure that the environment element of the Managing Responsibly System is effectively managed, maintained and developed by implementing and reviewing processes and tools in line with ISO14001 and relevant best practice guidance.

Lead and coordinate the implementation of the environmental performance standards into the operational business units.

Oversight of internal training and awareness on sustainability, including environmental compliance.

Provide input in conjunction with the Sustainability Manager to the Capital approvals process to ensure that sustainability considerations are taken into account in the project planning stage.

Ensure contractor performance is monitored and recorded in accordance with the relevant Procurement procedures and contract obligations and act as the local point of contact for these contracts.

Managing external consultants appointed to undertake specific environmental studies.

Present Sustainability progress at the Managing Responsibly Governance Group.

Schedule and carry out sustainability audits in line with the Managing Responsibly System Audit plan.

Technical Input to AGS Tenders ensuring environmental performance is considered.

Drive the Sustainability Agenda through individual airport sustainability boards and continuous liaison with department heads at your airport.

Lead and drive improved environmental performance of business partners/retailers through alignment of the AGS Net Zero Roadmap.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
-
Degree in Environment and/or Energy Management, Sustainability, Environmental Science or similar.

Knowledge of ISO 14001 or other environmental management systems.

Knowledge of regulatory reporting (e.g. CRC and ESOS) and liaison with regulatory bodies in connection with approval applications (e.g. waste management licensing and variations to discharge consents).

Capable of being highly self-motivated, with attention to detail, creative and proactive working, whilst being able to organise and co-ordinate team working to deliver overall objectives.

Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills will be needed to gain support for performance standards and to implement change.

The ability to work comfortably and effectively across a diverse range of environmental disciplines involving multi-stakeholder interfaces, competing priorities and tight deadlines is an essential requirement of this role.
