Job Purpose: To build and maintain company semantic models, train BI leads on those models, triage their daily questions, and enforce compliance with the single source of truth.
Responsibilities:
Semantic Model Development & Support:
- Build and version control semantic models in Power BI.
- Perform data modelling, transformation, and visualisation using Power BI.
- Test model updates before deployment and write clear release notes for BI leads.
- Investigate performance semantic model performance complaints (e.g missing data, slow loading e.t.c)
Training & Enablement:
- Act as a key user of the company’s ERP systems, supporting BI lead requirements for development work.
- Train BI leads on model-first development.
- Run weekly drop-in office hours and monthly workshops.
- Maintain short, practical documentation – for example, “Using the Sales model”.
- Create and maintain presentations for staff that effectively communicate analytics, insights, and recommendations to stakeholders.
Triage & Change Requests:
- First contact for all BI lead questions.
- Process straightforward change requests – for example, adding a field that already exists in the source system.
- Cross reference definitions across the Company’s terms dictionary, escalating definition conflicts to the Principal Analytics Architect where appropriate.
- Log, track, and resolve tasks in a timely manner, escalating to the Principal Analytics Architect when necessary.
Compliance & Enforcement:
- Run the daily shadow model detection script against Power BI activity logs.
- Flag violations to BI leads and agree a remediation deadline.
- Produce a weekly one-page compliance report for the Principal Analytics Architect.
- Manage the decommissioning of legacy reports after cutover.
Third-Party IT Support:
- Raise purchase orders for new equipment once signed off by Principal Analytics Architect.
- Assist third-party IT in setup, configuration, of devices as needed (switching on, ensuring connected etc.).
- When requested by third-party IT; Aid in critical scenarios for personnel not being able to perform their function.
- Oversee process for signing laptops in and out for staff, ensuring damages reported to Principal Analytics Architect / HR as needed.
Skills and Experience Required:
Essential:
- Minimum of two years’ experience with SQL (PostgreSQL experience advantageous).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including Pivot Tables, VBA, and Power Query.
- Experience with data modelling, transformation, and visualisation using Power BI.
- Experience integrating charts, graphs, and tables from Excel, Power BI, or other data sources into presentations.
- Experience training or coaching non-technical report builders.
- Has used Power BI activity logs or governance APIs to monitor usage.
- Comfortable enforcing rules without damaging working relationships.
Desirable:
- Have worked in a federated or decentralised analytics model.
- Experience with a migration cutover and legacy decommissioning.
