JOB OVERVIEW
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised Visual Arts Technician (0.6 FTE) to support learning and teaching across a range of visual arts disciplines, with particular responsibility for the operation and development of our printmaking workshop and photographic facilities. The successful candidate will oversee the safe and effective operation of the printmaking workshop, analogue darkroom, photographic studio and associated equipment. They will provide technical support, inductions and guidance to students and staff, maintain specialist facilities, manage consumables and equipment inventories, and support exhibition installation and public presentation of student work. The role requires a practical, student-centred individual with experience in printmaking and/or photography and a willingness to develop expertise across both areas through ongoing professional development. Training and support can be provided for candidates who are stronger in one discipline than the other.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential:
Degree in a relevant subject and/or equivalent professional experience.
Experience working within a printmaking workshop, photographic facility (analogue) or related creative technical environment.
Knowledge of workshop management and equipment maintenance.
Experience supporting students, artists or creative practitioners.
Understanding of Health & Safety requirements in workshop and studio environments.
Commitment to ongoing professional development.
Desirable:
Experience of both photography and printmaking workshop environments.
Knowledge of colour darkroom processes.
Familiarity with alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype, salt printing or lumen printing.
Experience of screen-printing processes
Experience of photopolymer plate production and exposure systems.
Experience with exhibition installation and gallery presentation.
Familiarity with letterpress and basic typesetting processes.
Experience supporting FE and HE students within art and design disciplines.
Knowledge of contemporary visual art practices.
