Bank Patient Transport Assistants are responsible for providing safe, caring, and professional transportation services for patients attending healthcare appointments, transferring between healthcare facilities, or returning home following treatment. The role requires delivering high-quality patient care whilst ensuring comfort, dignity, and safety throughout the patient journey.
Working on a flexible bank basis, the postholder will support operational demands across NHS Grampian services and will contribute to the effective delivery of patient transport services in accordance with NHS policies, procedures, and contractual requirements.
Please note: This role will be on a self employed basis with shifts based on a first come basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a safe, compassionate, and person-centred transport service to patients with varying physical, mental health, and mobility needs.
- Assist patients during collection, transfer, and discharge activities while maintaining dignity, respect, and confidentiality.
- Support patients boarding and alighting vehicles using approved moving and handling techniques.
- Monitor patients during transport and promptly report any concerns regarding their health, wellbeing, or safety.
- Provide reassurance and appropriate support to anxious or vulnerable patients.
Transport Operations
- Ensure patients are transported to and from healthcare facilities in a timely and efficient manner.
- Conduct vehicle safety checks before and after shifts in accordance with company and NHS requirements.
- Maintain accurate journey records, patient documentation, and electronic systems as required.
- Ensure all equipment used during patient transportation is maintained, cleaned, and stored correctly.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards, including vehicle cleaning and decontamination protocols.
- Report incidents, accidents, near misses, safeguarding concerns, and clinical observations through appropriate reporting systems.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, Data Protection legislation, and NHS information governance standards.
- Participate in mandatory training and competency assessments.
Communication and Teamwork
- Communicate professionally with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, hospital departments, and colleagues.
- Work collaboratively with dispatch teams, clinical staff, and operational management.
- Demonstrate flexibility to support service delivery across different locations and shifts.
Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
- Full UK Driving Licence (if required for driving duties).
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy, compassion, and respect for patients.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to undertake mandatory training including moving and handling, safeguarding, first aid, and infection prevention and control.
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in patient transport, healthcare, social care, ambulance services, or customer-facing roles.
- Knowledge of NHS patient transport services.
- First Aid qualification.
- Manual Handling certification.
- Basic Life Support training.
