Role Overview
As Assistant Manager, you will support the General Manager in the day‑to‑day running of a busy, traditional pub. You’ll lead the front-of-house team, ensure smooth service, and help maintain excellent standards across food, drink, service, and compliance. You’ll act as a role model for the team and step into the GM role when required.
Key Responsibilities Operational Management
- Support with the opening and closing of the pub, including cashing up and daily reporting.
- Oversee busy service periods and ensure the team delivers outstanding hospitality.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, and presentation throughout the pub.
- Assist in stock management, ordering, deliveries, and cellar operations (including beer line care).
People & Team Leadership
- Lead, motivate, and support the front-of-house team during service.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and training of new team members.
- Help manage rotas to ensure the right cover across shifts.
- Foster a positive team culture built on communication, professionalism, and fun.
Customer Experience
- Ensure every guest receives a warm welcome and fantastic service.
- Handle customer feedback professionally, resolving issues confidently.
- Maintain The Coach & Horses’ reputation for quality, consistency, and friendliness.
Compliance & Standards
- Support with health & safety, food hygiene, and licensing compliance.
- Maintain accurate records including due diligence checks and incident logs.
- Ensure cellar management meets quality standards for cask and keg products.
Financial Awareness
- Assist with managing labour costs, stock control, and cash management.
- Help drive sales through high-quality service, upselling, and events.
- Support marketing activities, including social media, promotions, and seasonal campaigns.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Previous supervisory or assistant manager experience in a pub or hospitality environment.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Confidence in leading a team during busy periods.
- Understanding of stock control, cash handling, and basic financial processes.
- Knowledge of cellar management (training can be provided).
Desirable:
- Personal Licence Holder (or willingness to obtain one).
- Experience with cask ale and traditional pub operations.
- Local market knowledge of Harrogate hospitality.
