Cleaning Supervisor & Custodian Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, reliable, and detail-oriented Cleaning Supervisor & Custodian to join our team at Scotland's largest Prep School, located in the Cramond area of Edinburgh.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the school, supervising the cleaning team, managing cleaning supplies and stock, and undertaking key custodial duties, including the formal lock-up and security checks of the school premises.
This role requires a strong commitment to customer service, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Reporting to: Bursar
Start Date: ASAP
Working Pattern: The role follows a split-shift pattern to support the school's operational requirements and includes supervising cleaning activities before and after the school day.
Expected Hours:
- 5.30am to 9:30am (3 days per week)
- 4.30pm to 8:30pm (2 days per week)
The postholder will work closely with all members of the cleaning team and provide support across cleaning shifts as required.
Holiday Entitlement: 40 days pro rata, including bank holidays
Key Responsibilities: Cleaning & Housekeeping
- Ensure a first-class standard of cleanliness is maintained throughout the school.
- Carry out cleaning duties safely, efficiently, and hygienically.
- Assist with daily cleaning tasks as part of the domestic services team.
- Monitor standards of cleanliness and take corrective action where required.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety procedures, including COSHH regulations.
Supervision
- Supervise and support the cleaning team to ensure all areas are cleaned to the required standard.
- Allocate workload and monitor performance across the cleaning team.
- Conduct regular quality checks and inspections.
- Report maintenance issues, cleaning concerns, and staffing matters to the Bursar.
- Assist with the induction and training of cleaning staff as required.
Stock Control
- Manage the ordering, storage, and replenishment of cleaning products, consumables, and equipment.
- Monitor stock levels and ensure adequate supplies are always available.
- Maintain appropriate records relating to cleaning supplies and equipment.
Custodial & Security Responsibilities
- Undertake formal evening lock-up procedures for the school premises.
- Carry out security inspections prior to closing the building.
- Ensure all windows and external doors are secured.
- Check that lights, equipment, and designated systems are switched off as appropriate.
- Activate alarms and security systems in accordance with school procedures.
- Act as a key holder where required.
- Report any security concerns, incidents, or building issues to the Bursar.
- Assist with opening and securing areas of the school as operational requirements dictate.
General Duties
- Work collaboratively as part of the wider school support team.
- Undertake training and professional development as required.
- Adhere to all school policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, and child protection requirements.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Bursar or Headmaster.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Previous commercial cleaning, janitorial, facilities, or housekeeping experience.
- Experience supervising or leading a team.
- Ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and responsible.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Flexible approach to working hours and duties.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements in the workplace.
- Willingness to undertake safeguarding and child protection training.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a school or educational environment.
- Experience as a custodian, cleaner, caretaker, facilities assistant, or key holder.
- Knowledge of security procedures and building lock-up routines.
- COSHH training or awareness.
- Basic maintenance or facilities management experience.
