About the opportunity
Surrey Steels is a growing steel business looking for an experienced Welder to join our busy Croydon operation.
This is a hands-on production role for someone with genuine steel-industry welding experience. You will be responsible for producing accurate, high-quality welds while working safely, efficiently and in accordance with fabrication drawings, job sheets and production requirements.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in their workmanship, understands the importance of quality and safety, and can work effectively as part of a busy yard and fabrication team.
Key responsibilities
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, welding details, job sheets and specifications.
- Confirm the correct materials, components and welding requirements before starting work.
- Prepare joints and components by cleaning, bevelling, aligning and securing materials.
- Select the correct welding process, equipment, consumables and machine settings.
- Carry out MIG, MAG, MMA or other welding processes for which you are trained and competent.
- Produce welds that meet the required specification, size, position and quality standard.
- Check joint alignment, dimensions and fit-up before welding.
- Control distortion and maintain component dimensions throughout the welding process.
- Visually inspect completed welds and identify any defects or areas requiring correction.
- Complete approved rework when required.
- Keep components correctly identified and traceable throughout production.
- Report drawing discrepancies, damaged materials, welding problems and non-conforming work promptly.
- Complete welding, inspection and production records where required.
- Maintain welding tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Work closely with fabricators, saw operators, yard employees, supervisors and quality personnel.
- Provide accurate progress updates and report potential delays promptly.
- Minimise avoidable material waste, consumable use, damage and rework.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area.
Health and safety responsibilities
- Follow approved welding procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Use welding screens, extraction, guards and all other required safety controls.
- Wear the correct welding PPE, including suitable eye, face, hand and respiratory protection.
- Inspect welding equipment, leads, torches, regulators and extraction systems before use.
- Report defective equipment immediately and prevent unsafe equipment from being used.
- Store and handle gas cylinders, welding consumables and flammable materials correctly.
- Maintain fire precautions and check the surrounding area for potential ignition risks.
- Follow hot-work permit requirements where applicable.
- Handle steel using the correct lifting equipment and safe manual-handling methods.
- Stop work and immediately report any unsafe condition.
Skills and experience required
- Previous professional welding experience within the steel industry.
- Competence in MIG, MAG, MMA or other relevant welding processes.
- Ability to read and work accurately from fabrication and engineering drawings.
- Good understanding of weld preparation, fit-up, alignment and distortion control.
- Ability to produce consistent welds to the required quality standard.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Good awareness of workshop and welding health-and-safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to the wider production team.
- Reliable, punctual and willing to follow production priorities and reasonable management instructions.
- Relevant welding qualifications, coding’s or recognised industry training would be advantageous.
