Senior Mechanical Design EngineerOverview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in the development, optimisation and certification of advanced mobile machinery and specialist equipment.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled engineer to lead projects from concept through to production, working on innovative products within a regulated engineering environment. The successful candidate will combine expertise in mechanical design, structural analysis, materials engineering and compliance to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Development
- Lead the design and development of mechanical systems from concept through to production.
- Integrate hydraulic systems into mechanical designs, ensuring performance, safety and compatibility.
- Produce 3D models and detailed engineering drawings using CAD software.
- Carry out FEA, stress analysis and simulation-driven design activities.
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, manufacturing and quality teams to deliver fully integrated solutions.
- Ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective and compliant with relevant engineering standards.
- Support prototype builds, testing, validation and troubleshooting activities.
- Maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation within ERP and PLM systems.
Compliance & Technical Documentation
- Ensure products comply with UK and European regulatory requirements, including CE and UKCA standards.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, risk assessments and declarations of conformity.
- Support customer acceptance testing, inspections and audit activities.
- Prepare technical files and supporting evidence for internal and external audits.
- Ensure product labelling, safety information and user documentation meet applicable requirements.
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready engineering records.
Structural & Material Optimisation
- Perform design optimisation to improve product performance, durability and efficiency.
- Conduct structural analysis and simulation activities to validate designs.
- Lead material selection and optimisation activities balancing performance, cost and manufacturability.
- Evaluate new materials and technologies with suppliers and technical specialists.
- Analyse test results and implement design improvements based on findings.
Risk Management
- Conduct design and process FMEA activities.
- Identify and implement risk reduction measures throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support safe and compliant engineering practices across all projects.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in mechanical design engineering within mobile machinery, heavy equipment or another highly regulated engineering environment.
- Strong CAD experience, ideally using PTC Creo or similar 3D design software.
- Experience of FEA, structural analysis and simulation-driven design.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and their integration into mechanical designs.
- Experience preparing technical documentation for CE/UKCA compliance.
- Strong understanding of materials engineering and product optimisation.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively to deadlines.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Mechanical, Structural or Materials Engineering.
- Experience working within defence, aerospace or similarly regulated industries.
- Knowledge of low-voltage control systems and CANbus architectures.
- Familiarity with ERP and PLM systems.
- IOSH qualification or equivalent health and safety training.
