The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Specialist SEN Tutor to support an 8-year-old learner with an EHCP who presents with complex Autism, ADHD, SEMH needs and significant developmental delay.
This is a specialist, highly personalised role focused on early communication, sensory development, play-based learning and engagement, rather than traditional academic teaching.
The successful tutor will have extensive experience supporting children working at a pre-National Curriculum developmental level and be confident delivering a sensory-rich, child-led programme within a home environment.
About the Student
This young learner:
- Is working significantly below age-related expectations at a pre-National Curriculum developmental level
- Has complex communication, sensory and developmental needs
- Uses behaviours, actions and vocalisations as his primary means of communication
- Requires constant supervision and high levels of adult support
- Is beginning to engage in short periods of adult-led learning when supported with visuals and routine
He particularly enjoys:
- Messy play (water, flour, oats, pasta)
- Climbing and physical activity
- Sensory exploration
- Spinning and sorting objects
- Outdoor activities
- Cause-and-effect play
Essential Experience & Knowledge
Due to the complexity of this placement, applicants must have significant experience supporting children with complex Autism and developmental needs.
Essential requirements include:
- Extensive SEND teaching experience
- Strong understanding of child-led learning approaches
- Experience supporting children working at a pre-verbal and pre-National Curriculum level
- Knowledge of sensory-seeking behaviours and how to safely support them
- Understanding of PICA behaviours and associated safeguarding risks
- Experience supporting children with:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- ADHD
- Significant developmental delay
- Communication difficulties
- Dysregulation and challenging behaviours
- Ability to understand and work at the student's current developmental level rather than chronological age
- Experience adapting learning and communication to meet highly individualised needs
Applicants without substantial experience supporting learners with similar complex profiles are unlikely to be suitable for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a highly personalised sensory and play-based curriculum
- Support early communication and interaction development
- Use a Total Communication approach, including:
- Visual supports
- Objects of reference
- Signing and gesture
- Intensive Interaction strategies
- Create engaging opportunities for sensory exploration and functional learning
- Implement visual routines and now/next boards
- Support emotional regulation and safe engagement
- Work collaboratively with parents and professionals involved in the wider support package
- Support the development of attention, engagement, communication and independence skills
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience delivering:
- Intensive Interaction
- Sensory-based learning
- Early communication programmes
- Play-based interventions
- Child-led learning approaches
- Strong understanding of safeguarding and risk management
- Experience supporting children who require constant supervision
- Calm, patient and highly responsive approach
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)
Important Information
This learner:
- Requires constant supervision
- Has limited awareness of danger
- Can become dysregulated during transitions and changes to routine
- Has sensory-seeking and PICA-related behaviours
- Benefits from a highly structured and predictable environment
- Requires support with personal care and daily living skills
Experience and specialist SEN knowledge are far more important than tutor gender for this placement.
Schedule
- Tuesday: 9:30am – 2:30pm
- Wednesday: 9:30am – 2:30pm
- Friday: 9:30am – 2:30pm
Breaks can be taken throughout the day to support regulation and engagement.
