Job Title: Head Gardener – Private Estate
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Up to £36,000 per year (depending on experience) Location: Comberton, Cambridge Schedule: Monday to Friday | 8:00am – 4:30pm Holiday: 24 days + Bank Holidays
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Head Gardener to join our private family estate and commercial business park. You will take responsibility for the care and development of a mature 10-acre site, working alongside a passionate horticultural family and a wider estate team. This is a hands-on, varied, and rewarding long-term role.
Part-time working may be considered for the right person (minimum 3 days per week)
Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop all garden areas including formal gardens, rose gardens, herbaceous borders, woodland, lawns, and hedges
- Carry out seasonal planting, division of perennials, and pruning of shrubs and trees
- Operate compact tractors, ride-on and pedestrian mowers, and handheld machinery
- Apply pesticides and herbicides in line with PA1/PA6 certification
- Manage cutting garden, greenhouse, vegetable garden, and polytunnel
- Liaise with specialist contractors for larger tree works
- Contribute ideas and enthusiasm to the garden's continued development
Requirements
- 5+ years' experience as a gardener, senior gardener, or head gardener
- 5+ years' experience operating large garden machinery
- Strong knowledge of herbaceous perennials, shrub and tree pruning, and hedge maintenance
- Experience with rose gardens, cutting gardens, greenhouse and polytunnel management
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Fluent English
Desirable
- PA1 and PA6 Spray Certificate
- Chainsaw certification
- Certificate of Higher Education in Horticulture or equivalent
