We're recruiting for a Lead Design Engineer to join a successful and growing engineering business based in Chesterfield. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious engineer who wants to take ownership of complex design projects, provide technical leadership, and progress towards a senior management position in the future.
The successful candidate will play a key role within the engineering team, combining hands-on design expertise with leadership responsibilities to support innovation, product development, and continuous improvement.
The Role
As Lead Design Engineer, you will take responsibility for leading design activities, supporting engineering projects from concept through to completion, and providing technical guidance to the wider engineering team.
You will work closely with internal teams, customers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while helping shape the future direction of the design function.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the design engineering team, providing technical guidance and mentoring.
- Manage engineering design projects from initial concept through to manufacture and delivery.
- Produce and review detailed engineering drawings, models, and technical documentation.
- Drive design improvements, innovation, and product development initiatives.
- Provide technical input into engineering challenges and problem-solving activities.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, production, and other departments to ensure successful project delivery.
- Support continuous improvement across design processes and engineering standards.
About You
- Experienced Design Engineer with a strong engineering background.
- Previous experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, or taking technical ownership.
- Strong knowledge of engineering design principles and processes.
- Proficient with CAD/design software (specific package experience beneficial).
- Ability to solve complex engineering problems and deliver practical solutions.
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to work with multiple stakeholders.
